Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi,
I have had type 2 diabetes now for over 10 years. At about the same time I started developing Restless Leg Syndrome which is now severe and am trying various medications to allevaite the problem. When I last sa my sleep consultant at Gouys he recommended I monitor my blood sugar levels as the Hba1c reading was hgh at 10%. I bought myself a meter and the readings are contsantly in the high range. I have requested the strips and lancets be put on my prescription but my doctor has refused, stating NICE recommendations, which I pointed out were general recommendations and each case has to be looked at seperately. Obviously theyb are trying to cut costs! Any one else had this problenm or RLS?

Well hundreds of Type 2s can't get a meter on the NHS BUT why doesn't your consultant write to your GP and ask him to prescribe one for you? But anyway I should imagine the consultant would like you to have as near as possible non diabetic levels of BG so as yours seems to be double what it should be, I should think you need to make some dietary and exercise changes to try and reduce it. Or have you already done that?

A lot of ladies get RLS around the menopause and thereafter - I was lucky and didn't. I dunno if I've ever known a chap that's had it before though. OTOH I haven't tried to sleep with many!

I’ve suffered with RLS since I was a teen, many, many years before diabetes was ever a problem for me. Now I’m pregnant it’s exacerbated the condition. Mine is usually triggered by over tiredness. Nothing has ever cured it other than moving the legs.

A friend developed this in his sixties. After trying various treatments Gabapentin cured the problem.
