Diabetes and Crohn’s disease.

Hi,

I’ve been diabetic since I was 19 (well that’s when I was diagnosed), but I have recently just been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease too.

I’ve read that there’s a link between Diabetes and Crohn’s and wondered if anyone on here has any experience.

I’m still waiting to see the specialist nurses to start a treatment plan but also waiting to see the consultant again to see if I need surgery or if medical will be the route we take.

Hi there, I’ve got ulcerative colitis and type 1 diabetes . I personally think there is a link as they’re both autoimmmune conditions and mine seemed to come up at the same time at a time of major stress in my life. You may find it helpful to join the ccuk forums too . Good luck with the crohns, remember, you’re often stronger than you think you are. Shout if you need any advice/ want to share more in a PM.

I copped for UC and T1 at the same time. Both autoimmune. Luckily both are behaving relatively well at the moment.

Yes it’s not uncommon for auto-immune conditions to cluster apparently

Crohns, Thyroid, Rheum Arthritis, Addisons etc.

Hope you get good treatment and specialist advice as to how to balance the needs of both conditions.

Yup, I’m another UC and T1, both starting in the same year. There’s no direct link, other than they are autoimmune disorders. My brother had UC, but no diabetes, my mother had T1 but no UC. Luck of the draw.

As an observation, I’d rather have UC than Crohn’s, for sure. The treatment for both can seriously affect diabetes, but it is controllable with experience.
