I care for my son who is 26 and has had diabetes type1 since just before his 2nd birthday, in the past 5 years he has had stomach problems and was eventually diagnosed with coeliac disease, he also has retinopathy. He struggles to control his conditions and is very depressed and anxious/withdrawn. I wondered if anyone out there has similar problems as I struggle to get him to engage with help from diabetes nurse or dietitian. He’s had no psychological support and I’m at my wits end trying to get help , any advice gratefully received

Welcome @Jean66 🙂 Sorry to hear your son is so down. Type 1 is a very wearing condition at the best of times, and when you have additional problems it can be exhausting. My advice would be to see if he’ll join this forum. Just being among people with Type 1 like me has helped me enormously. Not feeling alone and knowing others understand is so helpful.

So sorry to hear that your son is struggling to manage his condition. That must be incredibly hard for both of you.

I would second what @Inka has said and encourage him to join us here on the forum. Just comparing notes with others who are facing the same challenges and understanding that, within this community, you are normal, can be really helpful and motivating.
He does also need to engage with his clinic team too though and let them know he is struggling and ask for help.

Does he have any technology to help him manage his diabetes? ie Freestyle Libre or a pump? Sometime a new "toy", so to speak, can generate some interest and motivation.

Welcome to the forum @Jean66

Sorry to hear how tough a time your son is having with his diabetes and his mental health. It can be a cruel and unforgiving condition - and the added complexity of coeliac must make things especially difficult.

Does he use insulin pens or an insulin pump?

Does he have access to Libre for continuous glucose results so that he can see when things are veering off track and/or get alerted if his levels have drifted out of range?

We have several members on the forum who have to juggle multiple health conditions, somthere are folks here who understand how hard it can be first-hand
