I have hardly eaten anything today except a salad roll, not too big, and went for a brisk walk.
The roll was over 3 hours ago and my reading just now was 13.5.
I am so hungry I feel sick. How can I have a reading like that with having eaten virtually nothing and taking exercise.
I just do not know what to do next.I am in total despair.

Some people find that there levels rise following exercise before it then falls.

Jon, do you know what your BG was just prior to eating your salad roll ? then two hrs afterwards ?

No,i never took that reading cause I was at work. But,if one little salad roll does that,i'm sared to think what a meal would do.

I sometimes find that eating sometimes drops my levels.

You know what, maybe I should be doing more nibbling rather than long fasts

Long fasts can be a bad idea John especially if there's then a meal of simple carbs like maybe white bread or a roll. The other day I registered much higher than lunch 4 hrs later even though I hadn't eaten. The liver can continue to pump out glucose to sustain us when we are hungry especially if there's then exercise.

My advice would be smaller protein type snacks more regularly. Cheese, a chicken leg, prawns, nuts, hummus and low carb crackers. Don't lose heart, you'll get there.

Thats the thing about diabetes it sometimes just works like that dont dispare Jon tomorrow is another day this is a marathon not a sprint you will get there

I agree with Amigo, more protein would be good. A roll can be quite high in carbs and with just salad it is not going to be filling. I would add some protein to the roll some cheese, or chicken. Can you get the Lidl rolls or burgen bread if you want a sandwich (apologies if this is what you had!). Also, have something else with the roll like a yogurt, some nuts to help fill you up.

It can feel like that some days, it can be pretty frustrating. By testing you will find out what you can and can't eat.

Hi Jon,
I have no idea what meds you are on so may I suggest you do some testing before meals and 2 hours after also a bed time reading. With these tests (keeping a food diary) go see your Dr for a meds review. There is no way on earth you should have to starve yourself to achieve good numbers.

I also agree with Amigo about finding small protein snacks, @Jon, and eating more regularly. Then testing before and after as suggested to find out what effect different things have on you. Once you discover a pattern you can test less often, and will enjoy your food again. Please don't think you have to starve - there are are some wonderful recipes and suggestions on the threads here 🙂

What meds are you on John? A white bread roll can have more carbs in than what I would eat in a entire meal. As others have said, protein is more sustaining and has less of a spike on BGs, fasting for long periods can cause your liver to push glucose into your system too.

Hi. It could well have been the roll. What meds are you on? What is your BMI? if you are very slim then Late onset T1 is always a possibility but not if you have some excess weight. Let us know about your meds.

Metformin(2 1000 perday),Gliclazide,plus aspirin and some cholesterol drugs.I'm a rattlebox really.

From your other post regarding pain and tooth problems, I personally would expect most people with diabetes to have raised numbers, you still need to take in a list of your blood sugar readings though and ask for a review of medication once your pain and infection have subsided.

Keep ya pecker up! I was diagnosed in Feb and its taken eight weeks or so to get myself in control and it takes a while for your body to adjust and to "feed" itself of a completely new regime. Its not good NOT to eat or have a long period of fasting. The best advice i got on here (contrary to the doctor) was to test and test and test. It only takes a moment. First thing before ANY food. Then two hours after each meal. Write down what you eat and the sorta portion size. You will find a trend. My chum recommended eat little and often to get your body ajusted and it works for me as I like a bike ride in the day. small micro meals three/four keep your metabolism working and your hunger satisfied. I go up to about 7.8 now and then and I am around 5.5 -6.3 most days. It took ages for my BG to go below 7.4 on waking. It was 12.2 without meds. Do not despair, I have ended up on 2x500mg Metformin and if it keeps my BG under control well thats what it is.
