I know I have to get my GP to refer me, but does anyone have any experience or knowledge of DESMOND courses?

It's going to take me a week to even get a glimpse of my GP (especially as I'm not ill), so just wanted to do some research first

I did one last year, 6 months after diagnosis, and found it really useful. It was a 1 day course and you were allowed to bring someone else with you to help absorb all the information (no tthat anyone did!) By then I'd done quite a lot of reading round so for a fair amount of the information it was confirmation that what I'd worked out was right rather than coming to it completely blind. For me that worked well because I think I might have found it all a bit too overwhelming if I didn't know anything before I went - on the otherhand if I hadn't known anything I'd have needed all the info. They give you lots of 'hands on' learning and paperwork to take home so that you can review it later. Hope this helps.

Thanks yes it is very helpful.

Sorry if I'm being a bit slow but what does DESMOND stand for?!

Thanks for the link I'll give it a try.

Hiya, DESMOND stands for Diabetes Education and Self Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed - which is all abit of a mouthful if you ask me. It's supposed to be a course to self empower type 2s.

May I ask what the DESMOND course entails as this was mentioned to me today funnily enough at the diabetes clinic at the hospital by one of the sisters there? I start on insulin next Thursday, would this be beneficial to me and how do I get on one??

Thanks.

Anything that helps us cope better with our diabetes is worth it. I have to wait for my GP to come back off holiday in a fortnight before I can even think about going to see him to ask for it.
