Hi
I was just diagnosed in January and my Doc has put me forward for this one day course at a "not so" local hospital. Apparently, it stands for Diabetes Education & Self Management for Ongoing & Newly Diagnosed! I have now had a letter from them to make an appointment. I was wondering if anyone on the forum has heard of, or been on one of these courses and can enlighten me about it, i.e., is it worth it. Apparently there are only limited places but you can take a family member with you. I asked my OH if he would come with me (he is T2 on insulin for quite a few years) but doesn't want to go. He has been having problems with his levels and thought it might help him too. xx Is

Hi Belladonna,

I'm going to one on the 13th March so will let you know how it goes! I'm sure other forum members have been-maybe try using the search option on here to see some past posts 🙂

Hope you can persuade your OH to go (even if he doesn't learn anything it'd be nice to have the support).

Hello.......I have been on the DESMOND course. And think it is defintely worth going to. 🙂. Even if it only to confirm that you know everything you need to know already. Plus meeting other people with similar problems also helps.

I went on it last year and found it quite helpful. You get a useful book to take away with you and a free lunch probably! and a chance to ask questions. Hope you find it useful.

There's some information about DESMOND here - some aimed at people with diabetes, others aimed at those who deliver the courses -
http://www.desmond-project.org.uk/programmes-271.html explains the 3 types of course.

If you want to check if there are other courses somewhere more convenient, then check the map - sometimes a centre further away is actually easier to get to than the nearest.

Generally, everyone who's been reckons it's worth going - and those who have never been offered any diabetes education wish they could get some.

thank you all for your replies. I phoned them today and have a place on a course at the end of April. Its not my nearest hospital but this one is easier for parking. I have tried to persuade my OH but he is stubborn and still won't go with me. I will just have to ask questions on his behalf and bring home any info to let him read it. I am glad I got the opportunity to go on a course like this, as I know its not the same for everyone, seems to depend on where you are in the country, I think. xx Isabel

Oh will be interested in how you get on Daisymoo. Please post on the forum and let us know. xxx is

Will do! Mine's the 13th March so will report back...I have to provide my own lunch though 😛 x
