I have not had a holiday for some years because I look after my husband who is not well full-time. I have the opportunity to go to Egypt over new year with a group of friends. My children and some other friends have offered to look after him if I go. I would love to do this. What is worrying me is that I will not have a lot of control over what I eat. Will 11 days ruin all the effort I have put in over the last five years? I try to keep carbs low and not to deliberately eat sweet things. One of the people who is going is a GP and says that I am being over anxious and that even if things deteriorate BG wise I will benefit more from having a break and soon get back on track. I have a decision to make and am finding it hard

Go for it! There's no point in putting all the hard work in if you can't enjoy life, and I'm sure it won't do you any harm if your control slips a bit just for a few days. Have fun! 🙂

It's only natural to be concerned about food when you are on holiday, I'm sure we all do that a bit.

I second Sally's comments, go for it! You'll be fine with the food. It's a fabulous place to visit.

Go for it and enjoy yourself It will do you the world of good. I looked after my mum virtually full time for a few years so I know only too well how important breaks are, be they a few hours or 11 days 🙂 .
As for the food, let your hair down a little you don’t have to go mad nor should you deprive yourself too much.

happydog...you haven't had a holiday for years...your family/friends have arranged for your husbands care...offers like that are rare...think you should seize the opportunity with both hands...you can control what you eat...possibly have to compromise on your diet a little...you may not...but...the benefits would far outweigh a temporary 'slip' in control...echo what the others have said...breaks are so important...have the holiday...you deserve it.

Go for it! You have to enjoy life and I'm sure the break will do you the world of good. If you have a little blip in your BGs it doesn't matter - it's not like you are doing it all the time. Enjoy yourself🙂

Should have said that I have a review in January, so what I have done will be noticed. I have tried so hard not to have to go on medication yet and my surgery are very keen to give out the pills.

Go on holiday & relax. That's what I did. Had a few naughty things & went back on track when I got home. BG soon got back to normal. In fact readings were still pretty good on holiday regardless of chips & baklava (not together).

Hiya Happydog! What will you be eating in Egypt? Local cuisine or Western food? If you can find out what's on offer before you go, you can mentally plan what you're going to allow yourself and not be side-swiped by any tempting surprises.🙂

Happy holidays!😛

This is exactly what I did when I went away last week - I walked loads, I was generally good, but I had a pizza at the end of the week and it was the most amazing pizza I think I've ever had. But my readings were still good, and I'm back where I need to be now I'm home.

Have the break, I think just being able to relax will be a brilliant opportunity.

Go for it!
Overall, you will benefit so much from the break from caring for your husband, break from cold & dark January, top up vitamin D stocks from sunlight (obviously avoid getting sunburned or offending local sensitivities, but sun on face and hands will help), opportunity to see new places, be with friends, enjoy new food (please don't restrict yourself to boring Western food, when Arab food is so good!), go swimming in warm sea etc.

Go for it happydog! A change of scene, relaxing in the sunshine with someone else to do the cooking and washing up will be just the best medicine for you. 🙂

I went for all inclusive holiday and came back to bloods. I weighed up how I would feel not to go, and did a bit of damage limitation. No pasta, rice or whatnot if I wanted a wee pudding, lots of water and diet juice.bloods did come down a bit

I'd go for it and enjoy myself. Life's not a dress rehearsal.

Thank you everyone for your replies. You have convinced me that I should go. I mentioned to the children that I was thinking of not going and they were not pleased and said they would be very disappointed because it was suggesting that they cannot cope!. I will certainly try the local food if I can as I know some of it is delicious. If things are very bad when I come back I will delay going for the review. We will be doing lots of walking. As several people have said sometimes we just have to go for it. Beginning to feel excited now 🙂

Aye, and you’ve got a built in excuse for any high BGs. Hot weather always puts my BG up, whatever I eat or not. There’s probably a complex physiological reason, but who cares. What I can say is that the holiday will do you far more benefit than a few spikes will do you harm. Have a great time:D

It's funny it's opposite for me. Warmth brings my BG down.

go and unwind and try to relax and enjoy yourself it will be fine

Heat makes my body more responsive to insulin too - so if your body does the same you'll be gobsmacked at how stable your BG is!

Nobody can MAKE you take medication unless you are literally helpless or sectioned. You are not either. Stop inventing things that could happen and just GO and enjoy yourself and be as selfish as hell for a bit!
