Dear Dafne
I am sorry if I seemed critical of you yesterday, I did not mean to be. I have not had the honour of meeting you and perhaps I was feeling a little sorry for myself about this. I would very much like you to meet my daughter and I but understand now why this is not possible. Perhaps one day you will be blessed with a child of your own, and then our two children could become friends and learn from each other about their lifelong companion Diabetes.

Until that happy day I hope you will be able to continue the excellent work I often hear that you do

Best Wishes

Wasn't there something in Balance recently about a Children and Young People's course being developed?

you'd have thought they'd make it a priority. maybe they thought they wouldn't make as much money from it.🙂

Parents should be invited on the course so they can pass on these skills to their children at a more gentle pace over weeks and months, there's a lot to take in on a 5 day course and I wonder if this is the reason for the age limit.

Great letter, you should send it, to DUK and JDRF at the very least.

Instead of having a go at DAFNE why not check out Uncle BERTIE ?
It emanates from Bournemouth, your patch. It defines itself as being for diabetics under 40, dunno if that includes children.

Presumably DAFNE excludes children for good reasons but perhaps Parents should be allowed in ?

Thanks- have indeed met Bertie online although he does live in the same town as me:D

DAFNE could run courses for parents of young children, but they would have to omit the part were you present the previous days results on an overhead projector in front of the class and discuss...........

I suppose that could still go ahead with results from the children's records, but that whole experience cant really be passed on though.......

We were told we couldn't do DAFNE, because the children are still growing and some of the rules don't apply.
I was always a bit cross that us parents aren't allowed to go on a DAFNE course. But our dietician was very good at giving us a lesson and I've also completed the Bertie course online. I still make mistakes though and it doesn't help that Carol NEVER finishes her dinner😱. I find carb counting stressful and always have to do it during eating:(

Does this always happen..?

Yes, it's very rare she finishes all her food 😡. I've tried smaller portions, but she seems to have the habit of always leaving something. And then she's hungry later.

Thats is a strange one, would she think she is greedy if she cleared the plate..........

I suppose if it was carb free items she left that would be OK, but its likely not eh?

No, unfortunately Carol's dinners are high in carb with hardly anything else. Not my choice, but because she was on 2 injections a day at the start I felt I couldn't go down the "it's either that or nothing" road. Now her diet is appalling. Potato (chips, roast or steamed) with cheese, pasta with cheese and rice with peas. Hardly any meat crosses her lips, only bacon and processed chicken kiev and nuggets. She'll only eat peas. No fruit. Plus of course she'll eat all the junk her friends offer her (she has no money to buy it herself).😱
Sometimes I think she doesn't eat her dinner/tea, because she's eaten something on the way home from school. But she denies that (naturally).

I would suspect she may be eating on the way home too, as her friends will probably be snacking too...............I always remember myself being reasonably hungry when school finished and couldn't wait till dinner..........

I am sure she may grow out of it and start eating all her meals, if not, well, it will be down to her to get right I suppose..............you cant be there forever....

I suppose the pump helps a lot with this kind of thing as she can adjust the dose as she eats..........

Yes, it does help, but (actually BUT) she still gives herself the insulin AFTER she's eaten, even when she knows beforehand how much she needs. I can't get it into her head that it would be better if she did it BEFORE (because AFTER is what we've always done on MDI). There's no reason she can't split it either, but at least she does give herself some before tea to bring her bloods down if necessary. I'll stop now before I go into a rant😉

Get ranting to carol............:D

If she doses up after, what are her mid meal readings like, if you can actually get her to test..........😱

Lol, good one!😉 Actually, occasionnally she'll test 2hrs after dinner/tea. But mostly its more like 3/4 hours after tea. They vary, it's about half and half. If high before dinner, then sometimes still high after, but sometimes fine. If within levels, usually within levels too.

I've been ranting at Carol for ages to no avail :(

Hi Monica, could your daughter be persuaded to utilise the pump getting her to bolus half her carbs up front and the rest when she's finished?

I think it would have been really beneficial for us to have been able to access a DAFNE course or somthing of that sort. Really just left to our own devices after a rather poor meeting with the dietician! Never mind 🙄
