DBG's running log

If only for my own benefit and somewhere to record key bits of training data thought I would start a little training log.

Main event this year so far is the Yorkshire Marathon so that's what I'm mainly focusing on. I desperately want a sub 4hr marathon - my first ever attempt was Sept 24 and the Loch Ness Marathon and was just a little out at 4.17. Training was interrupted by a stupid (as in it was all my own fault) Achilles injury a couple of months before so my final weeks of training were badly hampered.

I absolutely loved it though and whilst it was physically and mentally tough - proper long distance running has been much bitten. So the target for York is sub 4.

If I can get an ultra in this year too that would be super. I run in sandals - trails, roads, summer, winter - sandals. Love them and nothing gets the blood flowing to the feet better than a sub zero run in basically what amount to not much more than flip flops 🙂

After faffing about getting my watch set up to accept readings from my Libre and poking around with Juggluco, WatchDrip and some data fields, watch faces and widgets I started things off with what was meant to be a 30 mins run on the treadmill. Don't like treadmill running particularly but it's still too icy out to safely run on the roads.

FP'd before starting of and was a little high at 11.7 but at my son's instance - he gave me one of his treat sweets, a One Shot Energy chew. 4.7g of carb and some caffeine which I ate as I was getting going.

A little glitch with the watch meant that the data fields were not updating so just had Juggluco running on my phone - being able to see my BG in pretty much realtime is game changing for longer running sessions.

In the end I felt so good I carried on for a full 10km at a steady 6.25 pace and knowing I had the 'fuel' to do so was just so nice.

BG according to Libre at the end was 5.1 bit the FP was a little higher at 6.1. it seems Libre continues on a downward tragectory a little but it's soon corrected itself and it's still easily accurate enough for me to judge fuelling by.

If I were going longer I would have fuelled when Libre ready in the 6's so no issues at all.

Key stats

Distance - 10km
Time 1.04.39
Start BG - 11.7
End BG - 6.1
Fuel - 4.7g carbs

A solid hour today. Start reading was much lower so took an energy gel (Kendall Mint Cake mint chocolate) and a One Shot. Seemed to keep me level-ish during the run.

@rebrascora - you are quite correct, the Libre doesn't like the cold! I was in the garage in a t-shirt and it kept crapping out. Started working fine the moment I was inside and was fine yesterday under a long sleeve top so may get a sweat band or something for when it's too warm to run in a long sleeve top but too cold for the sensor

All very useful stuff to find out early on 🙂

Key stats

Distance - 8.27km
Time - 1hr
Start BG - 8.1
End BG - 5.7
Fuelled at start and after 15 mins/7.6
Fuel 32g

From a quick Google the target date is 19th of October? Obviously good luck with the training, I look forward to seeing how you get on 🙂
That's the one. If I can stay injury and illness free I think I can do it.

May try the Eyam half again in May also. Did it last year and it's brutal. *Very* lots of hill!

Feeling good though at the moment. Not really done much training since the Loch Ness and I'm very pleased with the last couple of days.

All good stuff. I'm leaving sorting out connection between my watch and Libre for now as hopefully switching to closed loop and Dexcom in the not too distant future.

Some of the Garmin watch faces I've seen show all the pump stats - they look very good.

Interesting. I've currently got a Forerunner 35 which isn't new and flash enough to support link to Libre. It's quite old though so suspect I'll probably upgrade that - and probably staying with Garmin - once I get onto closed loop and have it confirmed that I'll be Dexcomming.

I think it will. It's the Garmin apps/third party phone apps that make this happen and not Abbott.

Can't remember if the 35 sports Connect IQ. If it does, it should do.

Smashing run tonight. Snow and ice all gone so out on the road. Great to get some hills in (no shortage of those in Sheffield!) and the Libre worked perfectly.

27g of carbs at the start kept me level until just as I was getting home and then you can set it starting to drop pretty quick so had another energy gel when I got in and soon going to have tea but will reduce the NR and correct at bedtime if need be.

BG graph - can see the rise as the energy gel kicked in, then pretty flat, then the drop at the end. The gel I've just taken is keeping me right about 5.

Running sandals=happy feet too. Best thing I ever bought for getting pure enjoyment back to my training and running...

Just as an aside. I am on Dexcom G6 and Tandem Tslim. I have found that after my early morning run, I would take the pump out of my waist belt to turn the insulin off whilst in the shower, and found the touch screen on the pump refused to respond to any pressure from any of my fingers. It felt very cold to the touch, although it had been next to my body throughout my run. The instructions only refer to not exposing the insulin to temperatures of less than 5C, but make no mention of the pump screen itself opting out in the cold! It does manage to work again after I hold the pump in my hands for a few minutes to warm it. To my great relief!

I'm unlikely to ever qualify for a pump but it's useful to know the limitations/environments various bits of diabetes tech like and don't like.

I can imagine the panic when it wasn't responding!

May be the cause of the Achilles injury? I admire you. I am jealous of people who can run and jump in the air

I nearly didn't land the jump and that would have ruined the marathon.

The Achilles injury is simple too explain. It started hurting a bit 800m into a trail run so I carried on and did 18km on it.

Very stupid but it was a beautiful day and I had a route I really wanted to try...

Lovely run tonight - only 6km as that's all my training plan called for (actually I should have done a little less but was feeling good).

Out on the road again, can't wait to hit the trails too. Hopefully won't be long until I can get out into the Peaks.
