I have been using dose adjustment for several years now with great blood control. Just lately I have been getting some really unstable readings from 1.9 to 17.5. I think it is related to Menopause as I am now 49 but am not really sure what is happening and where I start to regain control.

I live in Dubai where DAFNE hasn't been introduced and I cannot find any doctors that specialise it so thought that maybe someone out there has experience with what I am going through and could help make some suggestions.

Welcome to the forum, cbz1963.

It's a shame that Dubai hasn't introduced DAFNE yet. However, some DAFNE information is available online eg http://www.bdec-e-learning.com/ (free to register and accessible from non-UK internet addresses, although Dubai might have it's own rules)

I guess that in any situation with irratic blood glucose readings, the only way to tackle it is to keep careful records (not just blood glucose, also insulin doses, food eaten, exercise, stress, illnesses, environmental conditions / temperatures, menopause symptoms etc) and review readings to try to make adjustments as possible.

As you say there is no doctor you can consult, do you mean that there is no diabetes specialist doctor or no gynaecologist who could discuss eg hormone replacement therapy?

Surely the medics know what diabetes is and also the menopause?
So can't see a problem myself, all you do is adjust your routine/insulin to combat the eratic readings. Yep it's frustrating and you won't always get it right, just plug away and you will be fine. 🙂

At 'that age' myself, and although not diabetic (son is T1) I am actually experiencing hypos occasionally (son lent me his meter and I was in the high 3s), which seem to be related to my cycle. Seen the GP who did blood tests and says that essentially everything is fine, so I've concluded it must be a hormonal thing. I imagine for some women it could be very challenging because the hormones won't necessarily die down nice and gradually, but go in fits and starts? Not very helpful I know, so I hope someone with similar experiences can chime in for you.

Hi, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm not sure if DAFNE would help you particularly, even if it was available, as you appear to have mastered carb-counting and appropriate dosing already yourself. I think the only thing you can do is test frequently and try to see if there are any patterns where you might be able to make adjustments to your insulin doses to compensate.

I haven't experienced this myself, but apparently Evening Primrose oil is good for modulating hormone fluctuations - I've been taking it for a while so maybe that's why I haven't had the problems!
