Off to a course this afternoon - Diabetes Education and Revision in Kent. Should have been referred last September when I was diagnosed but it didn’t happen so I chased it up and got it. Looking forward to consolidating my experiences and hopefully learning more.

Good luck, I hope you find it helpful .

Hope it's a good one @Flakie

Keep us posted with how you get on and how you find it.

I haven't ever been offered a course :(- let us know any useful info Flakie X

Will let you know how I get on. I should have been there last year but no referral made so I had to chase it.

I'm lucky as I've never been offered a course and training on the Eatwell Plate. Hopefully this course will be up to date and provide good information on a broad front. I have seen reports of good ones but so many are poor

The course was quite enjoyable and there were only 9 of us there so plenty of opportunity to ask questions. We were shown the famous Eatwell plate and talked a lot about foods etc. I’ve been avoiding things like pasta, bread and cereals completely but they were saying that a balance is good and these things can be eaten in moderation. I mentioned testing but there were only three of us that test and they seemed quite sceptical about its usefulness. I said that all my knowledge comes from this forum and I couldn’t see how I would know what foods adversely affect me if I didn’t test. We talked about exercise and also had an NHS podiatrist come in with some very graphic photos of what can happen to your feet! We talked numbers and what were the optimum levels of blood sugar and cholesterol and so on. To be honest I didn’t learn a great amount as I have made it my business to learn as much as I can about the condition, but there were people there who had been diabetic longer than me who didn’t seem to know as much. I’m glad I went though, and was told that this forum and website is recommended as there is always plenty of up to date info on here. The main thing I came away with is to perhaps be a little more adventurous with the food I eat as I have been fairly restrictive up till now as I think I was a little afraid of raising my blood sugars too much if I went off track. That is getting a bit boring so I will try some different things. But I’ll still be testing just to make sure!

Great to hear that your proactive approach has resulted in this opportunity.
I look forward to hearing how you get on.
