Does anyone cycle reasonable distances a week?

I'm trying to build up to 15 miles a day after a 4 month lay off.

And also how do you find the gels and protein bars?

I bought a bike last year with the intention of learning to ride. I rode it for above five minutes in my local park before I crashed and half fell into the river! It's now sitting in my garage and has been there gathering dust!

It depends what you call reasonable. I cycle 4 miles each way to work. The other day I had my hospital appointment which is in the opposite direction so I cycled 2 miles there, then 6 miles to work and later 4 miles home. Sometimes we go for a longer ride at the weekend, about 15 miles along the Thames. I don't find I need gels for the distances I cover.

Agree with Radders. You may not need anything really it just depends how you feel. Are you on any sort of medication? Insulin can a bit of a pain to manage with exercise but if you are on it don't let it stop you as it certainly gets easier to manage with practice. I use gels and energy/protein bars and find them useful (especially to try and stop heading into hypo territory). Gels are around 23g of fast acting CHO so if my BG is dropping I can take one to raise it or keep it level - if I overdo it I can usually burn it off. Something to bear in mind as well is the body replaces the glycogen used in the exercise and the effects of this can be experienced for up to 24 hours and sometimes longer.

I tend to get out once or twice a week so usually make the most of it and try and do longer distances. 15 miles a day is pretty good going - good luck with it. 🙂

Now's the time to dust it off and give it another go Rosie with 'Summer' 😉 just around the corner. 🙂 Was glorious weather here today.
