I'm 1 year short of 50 (how did that happen?😱) and my knees are a bit painful atm. I was just wondering if anyone here (especially those on insulin) takes a supplement for their joints (Omega-3, glucosamine, eg) or if there are Omega-rich foods I could add to my diet? 🙂

I have sardines on toast or salmon to get my Omega stuff 🙂 Sardines definitely the cheaper option! As a runner for over 30 years I have found that my knees only get creaky when I don't exercise them properly. I've never taken any supplements. When I first started running I nearly ruined my knees by not wearing proper running shoes - my knees virtually seized up, so regular movement is beneficial, plus appropriate footwear. I remember an old wives' tale that neatsfoot oil was good for joints, but having just looked it up on google I see that it's used for softening leather! 😱 So, not sure about that one!

I've been taking glucosamine for years as my knees aren't very good ('wear and tear, dear...' said my then-GP 🙄). I do find now that exercise helps a lot, as Northerner says, and I've gone back to doing a bit of yoga...(phew, strenuous? not half!) and that seems to be doing them good too.

Our elderly cat, who is nearly as old as the Queen in cat years, also takes a feline glucosamine for her joints 🙂

Thanks for the replies, Northener and Pine Marten.🙂 I exercise every day, which normally keeps the creaks at bay, but this week my knees are sore for some reason (must be the drop in temperature).🙄
I think I'll have sardines on toast for lunch. :D

I have creaky knees and hips after an excess of sport in my younger days. I have taken glucosamine for about 10 years now, but it also goes with daily exercise. I haven't had sardines for ages. Perhaps I should go back to that as an alternative.

I am an Electrician & always up & down ladders & on hands & knees doing re-wires. I think eating oily fish is like oiling your joints :D Good luck & enjoy eating as much fish as you can get 😎

Erm, what do we mean by creaky? It might be because I'm a mere stripling at 42 or my super powers of flexibility but I'm not sure what creaky knees are 😳

If they're popping when moving I know what to do about that, is that the same thing? As we age our tendons become less elastic and that can cause popping of the joints and or a feeling of tightness which can also lead to pain. You need a magic circle (Pilates) and stretch the legs out regularly (or you can use those bands if you're brave, I gave myself a thwacking bruise with one of those things it's basically a giant elastic band 😱), plus a magnesium supplement (careful there it's toxic in high quantities) or Epsom salt soaks (safer magnesium as it happens) will relax the muscles and tendons and make stretching easier. You'll be proper bendy after all that :D

Pete had old age in one knee but he was referred to orthopaedics as the GP thought he might have done it when he came of our mbike some years previously. Turned out is was calification of the cartilage - which actually is the absolute opposite of what it sounds like - hardening, tight? No - softening!! LOL And that was helped by physio for knees at the hosp - sort of weekly circuit training for the knees, and he'd also sit on the settee and do the rubber band exercises at home too whilst watching the telly - he kept the latter up for several months (and he was still working standing all day at various machines plus lifting and carrying heavy stuff (making pressed stainless steel kitchen for MaccyDs, Ikea restaurants etc) in between the actual standing operating the presses) - and he's been fine since. Still gets Ibuprofen and Naproxen on demand from the GP if ever he needs any - though V rare these days said she grabbing the top of the dining table in between typing!.

I'm mildly surprised Alan hasn't (yet) inserted his poem about oily fish into this thread. 😉

Happy to oblige! :D

Oh oily fish! Dear oily fish!
By far and away my favourite dish!
Infuse me with your Omega 3,
Please oily fish, come dine with me!

Oh, take away my chicken bhuna!
Replace it with a slab of tuna!
And though I love the taste of gammon,
I'd much prefer some Scottish salmon!

Imagine eating with every course
Some pilchards in tomato sauce!
If every herring could be mine,
Then life on Earth would be divine!

So, fill me up with oily fish!
Believe me, it’s my dearest wish!
My heart’s desire, where have you been?
Embrace me now, oh plump sardine!

:D

I think I've lost some flexibility and range of movement. My fault - in August I swapped dog-walking for exercise-biking (to avoid my mega-highs during dog walks), but I've just started dog-walking again. I suspect the range of movement and flexibility required when covering uneven terrain on foot is causing my creaks. Basically, my knees feel (and look a bit) swollen for a time afterwards - it can happen when I hoover or wash up too! I'm working on my flexibility as well...I guess it'll just take a bit of time for my knees to get used to a good old walk again.🙄

Thanks for your replies, everyone. Getting old sucks! 😱🙂

So supplements and insulin are OK together? That's one of my concerns! Which one d'you take, SB? Just had a look online and there's loads to choose from!

I take glucosamine sulphate (500mg) and oil of Evening primrose
I checked when diagnosed that these were both okay with insulin.

I hope that helps

Thanks, SB. That's a big help...I'll be break-dancing again in no time.🙄

I have terribly painful elbows. Hurt when stretched out & when folded in. No pain inbetween. Was referred to physio & given exercises to do, but made no difference. Also given Naproxen but it doesn't work.

Aw, poor you, Mark.
