Hi all just looking for some advice, I am diabetic type 2 on tablets for that and for high blood pressure I work in a ambulance a and e emergency control room, i cannot have the flu vaccine as i reacted badly not a epipen job but eye and face swelled up to the point i could not see, and was unwell, the same thing happened when gp tried to change my blood pressure tablets and had to go back on the original tablets, also reaction to the needle point when they did a antibody test arm came up swollen and heavily bruised. I had covid in October was quite ill not hospital but ill , still got lingering effects, sore head, headaches, rashesand most devastating is im loosing my hair at a very fast rate normally thick curly hair but now going thinner and balding in places i am told this is temporary i hope so but does not make me feel good at the moment.

But I have heard if you have had covid you can have a worse reaction to the vaccine, and given my history of reactions its actually starting to worry me and also I feel under immense pressure to get it from my works, just hearing peoples opinions that you should get it and Im already not sleeping with the covid after effects but i cant even get a gp consultation at the moment, I have a nurse appointment next week for a post covid blood test, i will discuss some things there but pressure of this vaccine is getting to me, just dont know how to go about it.

This is an issue you need to talk to with the professionals that know your medical issues and allergies.

Janine - flu jab normally involves eggs in its production as an awful lot of vaccines do and shedloads of people are equally allergic to the vaccine as you, because of that.

It is my current understanding that none of the 3 jabs currently at large (we haven't got the Moderna one in the UK, only the Pfizer BioNtech and the AZ ones) use eggs to make them. Obviously take your own doc/nurse's advice way over what any of us say - and I hope you can get a jab OK and don't suffer.

Jan the government have listed what is in these injections so best to do an internet search. also from what i can gather when you do go for the vaccine they do ask about any allergies. i was concerned as i suffer from allergies and asked my district nurse who thinks i should be okay.

Thanks all for your advice they dont know if i am allergic to eggs or not as the medications that was changed had no eggs in them yet i still had a similar reaction i know after the flu jab it put me off work for about two weeks so it was not a 24 hour thing but like you say ill have a word when i see my nurse to me they just want to seem to stick it in everyone and no matter what the reactions are, well maybe thats just how I have been made to feel, and make you feel really bad if you dont want to have it, i know its a good thing for some but not for me making me worry alot but thanks ill wait till i see my nurse next week cheers all, stay safe x

Sorry to hear about your previous reaction to the flu jab - I can see why it might make you anxious about other vaccinations, but from what I can gather the covid jabs haven’t had many bad reactions at all

Not sure if there’s anything that might throw more light on your thinking in this thread?

Certainly the Aztra Zenica one doesn't. The following is from an invitation to the jab from the NHS trust I work for: "This will be the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine which does not contain any animal products or egg."

I'm not sure about the Pfizer although I had that last Thursday (at a different NHS trust) and had no side effects, but then I never get side effects from the flu jab either. We are being encouraged to have the vaccine but I didn't feel pressured into taking in, in fact I nearly bit my service manager's hand off when she offered me the chance of the Pfizer earlier than the AstraZeneca jab.

Hope you get some useful information and some reassurance from the nurse at your appointment this week.

@Jan1967, just occurred to me that one of our practitioners, who never has the flu jab since a bad reaction (she has ME), had the Aztra-Zeneca vaccine. She felt very feverish overnight, took herself off to bed at 6pm with paracetamol, and was fine the next day. Obviously can't say how you would react, but just to let you know.

Mixed bag of side effects across the team ranging from none to headache, sore arms and.or feverishness.

Seen my nurse this morning, told her whats happening she asked if i wanted the flu jab i said no and i showed the photo i have kept after my reaction she said i dont blame you for not having it, also my arm has come up swollen where she took the blood from she could not believe it big bruise coming up now she is also going to check my thyroid with the loss of hair as covid can damage organs so at least it will be checked does not fill me with joy though today still only getting two to three hours sleep a night blood pressure high when previously i have had good results with medication so everything that i have been doing by following what i am told seems to have gone out the window, ill be ok, got to be, nurse cant advise on the vaccine due to my reactions she said it must be a doctor told her tried getting a telephone appointment for the last week no success so will try again over the next few days, she has said maybe the pfizer might not be good for me but need to speak to a doctor it is on my records that i had a adverse reaction to medications, flu jab reaction wont be on as did not get it through my surgery when i had it but she took note of the photo, so will have to see if i can speak to my doctor i am hoping they can advise me better. Plus i have to try and get a vaccine when im off as if i react like last time i wont be able to work and i work 12 hour shift work.

Can you not book a phone consultation with your Doctor?
Thats what i have been trying to do, you ring up at 0800 stuck on phone for half hour by the time you get through all telephone appointments have gone so just have to keep trying, plus i can only ring in between shift work

My surgery release phone consultations online after 6 pm the day before. Is it possible yours releases some then ?

Oh ,it was a thought. My surgery has been been doing phone appointments first for a couple of years, last year it put mee off contacting when I was not well. Both times I did use I got phone appointments at least a hour later, which were both followed up a couple hours later with a face to face appointment.
