It had to happen! I think it was @Northerner who predicted it,

I just caught the end of an interview on BBC News channel, think it was a Spanish woman (doctor? scientist?) talking about investigating metformin as a drug that reduced inflammation, and potentially may lower the rates of admission to hospital and death for those with covid 19.

Not yet an important theory.

Shouldn't assume anything will come of this.

I think it’s understandable that people are desperately scrabbling around looking fro glimpses of hope, but I wonder if stories like this one have the potential to do much more harm than good.

We’ve already seen that with ’scares’ and speculation about both ibuprofen and BP tablets - which have had question marks raised over them, but those questions then quickly dismissed as speculative and without much if any evidence to back them up.

But of course, once the rumour mill starts to grind...

In this case, it could potentially cause an unsustainable spike in demand for metformin which could deny access to people who genuinely need it for its primary purpose.
