This was stated after Boris Johnson’s 5pm briefing by the chief medical officer. I think the recommendation for this group is social distancing for 12 weeks starting at the end of this week. However somebody else might want to check the press conference speech which is currently on a video at www.bbc.co.uk/news to check if I’ve got anything wrong.
Does this mean that all type 1 IDDM should self isolate. I am a cancer surgeon and that would mean lots of people's operations cancelled. When is this from? It seems a slightly bizarre statement as over 65s get the flu jab and only over 70s have to self isolate
All information is from the 5pm update by the Prime Minister and then further clarification from the Chief Medical Officer who speaks after the Chief Scientific Officer. I envisage schools closing shortly too if they follow this through. The number of teachers with Type 1, severe asthma or other chronic illnesses who have to have the flu jab each year is clearly going to be high, meaning there will be a shortage of available teachers. Add to that the number of teachers who will be self isolating when members of their households come down with temperatures and coughs and things will start to look bleak. However, let's not forget this is based upon extremely detailed research aimed at minimising the risk and spread of the disease and the impact upon a very stretched health service.
As a teacher with Type 1, asthma and high cholesterol, who has to have flu jab and pneumonia vaccine each year, I have just emailed my head teacher to tell her the bad news. Add to that my daughter came down with a temperature this morning and my wife has a cough and it's not looking great in our household!
So you have to self isolate for 14 days from now. At least there will still be ITU beds and ventilators if you need them. It seems that we should all be doing the full 12 weeks but I think he said from next weekend. That would give us all a bit of time to get our lives in order.
I used to think the Chief Medical Officer was speaking clearly, but after watching this afternoons performance, my inital thoughts on somethings he was not clear, saying Significant Heart Disease and Respiratory Disease with out qualifying what he meant by Significant. Then he mentioned people with Lymphoma and left that hanging.
I now think he either is just a poor communicator to the general public, or does not believe what he is saying.
