Hi all

I know this really should go into 'Off the Subject' but wanted to make sure everyone spotted it.

Saw on DUK's page yesterday that they are looking for 8,000 people to help carry the Olympic Torch around the UK. And if we know someone inspirational we can nominate them.

Well I immediately thought of our very own marathon-running Admin 🙂

The initial draw is done at random, so if you'd like to see Northie carrying the torch on our behalf, and being interviewed to raise awareness about genuine diabetic issues/lifestyles then why not consider nominating him too.

Details are here: http://www.london2012.com/games/oly...-the-olympic-flame/nominate-a-torchbearer.php

Entries close June 29th 2011

You'd need to PM Northie as you need some contact details during the nomination process. You also need to write approx 150 words on why you think Northie should be considered if selected in the random draw.

How cool would that be!

What a great notion! How do you feel about it Northe, are you willing to be nominated? If yes, PM please.

That is a fantastic idea, so long as Alan is up for it! You would be such a worthy torch bearer.

If that's a Yes, Alan, please PM me the necessary details too, cos I'd like to pitch in with my 4 pennorth.

To save Northie having to keep cheking this thread, I'd suggest you PM him so he can provide you with the details you need 🙂

Yes, I'd be happy to be nominated, it would be a great honour and would really help spread the word 🙂 Thank you!

PM has been flung your way Northe.

Not sure if anyone knows - a person can only be nominated once in the process (to make it fair, I guess, and not a popularity contest!). So only one of us needs to nominate Alan 🙂

In that case... any other keen runners fancy a nomination?

I would like to wish Northener all of the very best with his nomination

That's not how I read it Shiv...

Each person can only nominate the same person one time, and can nominate more than one person, but they aren't expecting everyone making a nomination to somehow make sure it's unique.

If you nominate lots of people, only of your entries one entry (selected at random) will be entered into the ballot. If the same person makes it through the initial random cull before the 150 words are read and considered then only one of their entries (again selected at random) will be used.

2. After the closing date for entries, there will be a ballot of Nominees to produce a shortlist. The ballot will be automated and applications will not be judged at this preliminary stage in the process. Only one nomination per person, selected at random, will be put into the ballot.

4. Where more than one nomination is received for the same person, only one nomination (selected at random) will be considered for the purposes of the nomination process. Torchbearers are only permitted to carry the Torch in one slot on the Torch Relay.

Unless I read that completely wrong!

Reading back I think you're right and I'm just confusing things :D a person can only be put in to the ballot once, but they can be nominated as many times as people do. So it still isn't a popularity contest...my brain is about to explode. Everyone ignore me and nominate Alan, I'm just getting confused (although I still don't think having more than one nomination increases your chances of getting a place?).

Ugh sorry, post lunch sluggishness!

Yes, it is a little confusing isn't it? I think what they mean is that if a person is nominated say 10 times then they will pick one of those at random for the ballot. If successful in the ballot then they will read the reason for the nomination. I wonder how many they will get overall?

Not touting for nominations, just wanted to thank everyone who has nominated me and to remind people that this is the last day for nominations to be made 🙂

Fingers crossed Northie 🙂 after some half-decent meeeja coverage today - (DUK's better to spend small of money now in order to avoid later costs...) let's hope you get a chance to present another positive D example!

Cheers Mike! I wonder how many people got nominated? If it's anything like the tickets ballot, I probably stand about as much chance as Usain Bolt*, but it is really wonderful to be nominated 🙂

*actually, I suspect I'd have much LESS of a chance than him!

Might find out today if I'll be carrying the torch! 🙂

I thought that when I heard they were appointing "the chosen ones" - hope to hear you've been succesful.

Have I got it right, though, that some of the nominations have been sold to sponsers/commercial companies ? If so I don't think that's on somehow - I thought it was supposed to be people who wanted/deserved the "honour".

I'm not sure, but I think that half the places went to the sponsors, but they are still selected by the same process - nominated by members of the public, but through the sponsor's websites. I don't think that the sponsors can actually pick and choose people. 🙂
