Cough meds?

hi my name is graham and I am on here for my dad if I’m honest, he is fairly computer illiterate so I am doing this bit for him. He has a cough and would like to know what he can take for it so where better to go than here. He has been diagnosed for about 4 months now and has had no leaflet of anything for advice or help. Any help with this would be appreciated, have a great eve all thank you

Hi Graham, There are quite a few sugar free cough medicines available. I believe Cavonia do one & there are also Hall's lozenges that are sugar free.

Ask your pharmacist and explain you dad is diabetic and he/she will advise - ours does.

I drink Lemon Juice. Jif out of the bottle. Would not touch 99% of the sugar in medication. Good luck

Depending what he is feeling, quite often just plain paracetamol does the job.

However, If I've got a heavy cough and am having trouble sleeping, I hit night nurse in capsule form. Night Nurse liquid is absolutely stacked full of glucose, but the capsules are fine.

I’ve not needed cough mixture for ages, but I find normal lemsips etc are fine for me. There is carbohydrate/sugar in them, but each measure of medicine is usually quite a small amount 5-10g I think. And when I have a cold my levels are usually a bit raised and haywire anyway so I would be taking extra insulin.

Mostly for a cough/cold I would take Beechams caplets, or plain paracetamol.

As has been suggested there are sugar free versions of lots of cough/cold meds, and pharmacists are well qualified to advise if you or your dad need more info.

As it happens, I am currently suffering from what I would describe as a 'non-productive' cough - I have a tightness in my chest and an annoyingly tickly throat, but when I cough it's not producing much in the way of mucous (sorry if TMI! 😱). I've just been to the pharmacy and she recommended Pholcodine Linctus, which is sugar-free 🙂 I've just taken some so will let you know what I think of it! Relatively cheap compared to the branded stuff at £3.59 for a 200ml bottle 🙂 (Bought it at Boots)

Aye, Pholcodeine linctus is probably the best of a fairly ineffective bunch. It’s a very distant relative of heroin, which is the best cough suppressant there is.🙂

That what they gave me in hospital when I had pneumonia and a cough that kept the Ward awake night after night. Had a bit of an effect but I find the others little more than sugar water (pholocodeine linctus incidentally, not heroin! )
