Hi.

I've been diabetic for around six years. I'm 27. They are unsure what type I am so as I have quite a complex medical history. I get ketones and have had mixed acidosis in the past. I'm on insulin. I inject background once a day and then QA each time I eat depending on the carbs. I did the DANFE course last year.

I also have complex mental health problems. Schizoaffective disorder. I also have very server asthma.

The problem is my mental health has been really bad and I've been neglecting my physical health. I just can't cope with the asthma and diabetes. I don't get any support with my mental health and it's been a constant battle. I was in psychiatric hospital for a few weeks I came out about a month ago and I haven't had any support since. I was also in my local hospital for my asthma and discharged myself Saturday. As I felt they were not looking after my diabetes.

I'm really struggling to cope with my long term health conditions. I don't know who to turn to for advice. My GP just refers to the mental health team. They refuse to take me on. It just goes around in circles. What can I expect in terms of support for physical health?

Welcome Dasroots. You sound like you are having a hard time. If it were me I would take positive steps. 1. get out & walk everyday (its not a race). 2. Join a local Diabetic Uk group & hear some good speakers. Possibly when you feel better do some charity work because its so rewarding. Good Luck 🙂

welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear you are having such a tough time. Lots of friendly people here for support 🙂

Hi Dasroots, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling and not getting all the support you need. Even when you do it does not seem to be very well 'joined up', with each expert concentrating only on one area of expertise. It might be worth calling the Diabetes UK Careline service to see if they can guide you to where you might find better treatment - contact details are on the following link:

https://www.diabetes.org.uk/How_we_help/Careline/

No guarantees, but they may be able to help. In terms of your diabetes, have a read of the following, and see if you are receiving the care you should expect from the NHS:

https://www.diabetes.org.uk/Guide-to-diabetes/Monitoring/15-healthcare-essentials/

It might also be worth raising your concerns with your local MP. Mental health is a 'hot topic' as far as the NHS is concerned, and it is also known to be related to having other long-term conditions. It may get something moving for you. I hope your situation improves soon 🙂

Hiya Dasroots and welcome.🙂 I hope Northener's suggestions lead to an improvement in your treatment...let us know how you get on.😱🙂
