Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Morning all, was diagnosed with type 2 about a month ago, but I think I may have had it for some time, since I visited my Doc back in February with cold feet and horrible pins and needles in them. Only got the call from my surgery when, after confusing my nurse at my annual blood test donation, she took a bunch of bloods and I got checked for it, almost by accident.It took less than 24hrs before I was contacted to talk about my reults.
I am now on metformin, 1 in the morning and 2 at evening meal time.
I have a question, I am flying to America next week. Do I smuggle my drugs in the hold or in my carry-on luggage? or have I missed a sticky thread here.
 
Hello @DenJerus welcome to the forum. Don’t worry, their is no need to smuggle your Metformin through security :D, their are lots of people on Metformin so they will be well used to it . Do keep it in the original packaging though and in you hand luggage but only because luggage in the hold can change its mind and go somewhere else . It’s also best to have a repeat prescription in hand luggage too.

I am very glad to hear the nurse was on the ball and tested you for diabetes. Hopefully the pain etc in hands and feet have begun to ease .

How are you finding everything so far? glad that you received a diagnosis (albeit and accidental one) and so are able to bring your levels down and hopefully ease some of the symptoms you were experiencing!
Ljc has given you great guidance on taking your medication through airports. Its also advisable to take extra, just in case for some reason you lose any. Have a wonderful time!

If you are trying to eat low carb I don't envy you - my daughter lived in Chicago for some years and managed to get her American husband into the UK on her return - he has lost so much weight and can't get used to meat not tasting sweet and being covered in sauce.

I didn't have too much of a problem in the US earlier in the year, I think they're learning. OK, I ate a lot of prawn salads, and omelettes, but the dressing always came separately, and there was a choice of plain oil and vinegar. Meals came with a choice of fries or salad. Because I'm lower carb, not low carb, there were also options like, burger with a slice of fried rye sourdough, instead of the standard huge bun. Supermarkets ( once you'd got past the donut aisle!) also had lunch items such as a pack of two hard boiled eggs, or chicken salad ( again, with the dressings separate) and sandwiches came with so much meat in them, I could ditch most of the bread and still struggle. (Fast food lunch outlets in the national parks had salad boxes as well as sandwich options) I actually lost weight while we were there, which I wasn't expecting.

NYC would be zero problem - fantastic salad bars all over the place & generally the best real-food eating anywhere, once you've worked it out. (However, you need to be there for about 5 years before identifying the 5 places in Manhattan and Brooklyn where you can get a decent coffee.)

It isn't really the US tho ...
 
Many thanks to all for the guidance lines. I must admit to taking more salad than I've ever eaten but it does go with most everything they serve over there. Biggest downfall however was the Ice cream Shop called Abracadbadra where they made the ice cream before your eyes with fresh cream and your choice of ingredients, freezing it all with liquid nitrogen right there on the counter!! I did, hopefully make good choices for my ingredients, selecting Coconut and Almonds with banana. I think I may be in denial!!
