Hi,

Im 21 and have been diagnosed for 2 and a half years now, but i just can't seem to get my sugars under control. my sugars range from 2.9 to 31 on a daily basis. My diabetes team just say i need to get on top of it, my hb1ac has gone down over the summer but i feel like its gone back up again.

Any advice? I feel like i will never achieve normal sugars! since being diagnosed I have never been below 68

Hi @ajd96 and welcome to the forum 🙂, I'm sure some of the more experienced members will be along soon but in the meantime why don't you tell us a little more, what insulins are you using and do you carb count and adjust your doses for what you eat? xx

Hi Ajd. Do you keep a diary of your levels? If so does this show you any patterns to the high and low levels?

I’m currently on low doses but I take 18units if Lantus once a day and then apidra with meals which I adjust. I try carb counting but that’s still a work in progress.

I have done a diary in the past and there was a pattern that I needed more apidra with meal but since then, there’s been no obvious pattern

T1 is very hard work at times. Your pancreas does not work at all. Being active is the best for all diabetics but it does make your bg go up & down. If I sit in the house I feel ill off high bg. Miles better at work or on peddle bike or simple walk. A Freestyle Libre will show you exactly what your bg is 24hrs a day. Good luck & welcome 🙂

Thank you!! Yeah I’ve heard a lot of the freestyle libre, but how do I find out the criteria for each area?

Hi ajd and welcome to the forum. 🙂 Have you done a formal carb counting course like DAFNE? If not, I'd certainly recommend it. I went on one for the first time last year after 30 years of T1 and still learned things. You also get the chance to meet other T1's which I found very supportive after what can seem quite a lonely experience dealing with it over the years.

The Libre has only recently gone on the NHS tariff and it's not clear yet which areas are providing it although if you have a search on the internet the initial reaction from CCGs unfortunately doesn't look too promising. You would need to speak to your diabetes team. Up to now people have been self funding as I do on occasions when I can afford sensors. Some clinics have allowed people to trial it with one or two sensors and that may also be an option.

It’s worth persevering with the carb counting. If you have any specific problems or questions about it please ask away. If you haven’t done a DAFNE course I also recommend it but I believe there are also online courses you can follow. Recording everything is vital to getting a handle on things I think.

How long since you basal tested - or have you npt been taught how to do it ?

If your basal isn't as 'right' as it can be - you'll never get the carb counting right. Basal needs are never static for many months at a time anyway! - bet that's something nobody's told you yet!

Please read this - and then, do it ! http://www.diabetes-support.org.uk/info/?page_id=120

I have not done a carb counting course and it was difficult to set up whilst jumping between uni and home but will definitely look into it more!

I had not been told how to basal test, in fact I haven't been told much about basal insulin than to take zed amount once a day! Thank you so much for the link will definitely try that now!

There is a serious amount of effort required in looking after diabetes & As soon as that effort begins to become less and less you're already sliding down a very large and slippery slope, There is a paradox of having A bad day, which leads to a bad morning, which in turn leads to a bad day... Positive thinking is key and so is a strong mind set to know that even if you fall of the wagon slightly you're still going to get to where you need to be, in this case between 4 & 7 blood glucose. My ultimate advice would be to understand this isn't easy and its a whole lot of trial and error, So keep at it and good luck you Diabadass!
