Hi, I’m new to the forum, I’m looking for some help as I’m constantly having hypos and my sugar has fallen to 1.2 the lowest reading I’ve ever had, my partner had found me on the sofa, could anyone give me any information around why this is happening as I eat and not miss meals and I don’t drink, I have other conditions, osteoporosis, life threatening Asthma and some other issues, my bloods have always been around 10 as I’m on constant steroids for my asthma and it has been well controlled but over the last couple of weeks it’s been terrible with my hypos, I’ve not taken my insulin’s, fast acting and long lasting when bloods are low and metformin, I’m so confused and scared something is failing in my body, today I’ve just come out of hospital due to my asthma and had three bad hypos in their and I’m waiting for an appointment to come through to see the consultant, I just don’t feel right in my self, any help on what you think is happening in my body would be great thankyou

Hi @Christian0706 Sorry to hear about your hypos. That must be very frightening for you - and for your partner.

You say you’re on steroids - does that change? Do you come off them or do they reduce in amount? Steroids can put your blood sugar up so if you’re on insulin and you suddenly stop or reduce your steroids, that might make your blood sugar lower.

You say you don’t take your insulin when your blood sugar is low, but are you still on insulin? If so, do you count carbs and make sure to eat similar amounts if you’re on fixed doses of insulin at mealtimes? Have you done a basal test to see if the amount of your basal insulin (Toujeo?) is at the correct level?

This is your previous thread:

Did you ask your team if you could get a CGM or a Libre?

The most likely answer for these bad hypos is that you’re having too much insulin for your needs, but if you could give us more information that would help a lot. Keep checking back on this thread because the email notifications that tell you you’ve got replies don’t always work.

Hi Inka
Thankyou for your reply, I’m constantly on steroids and my levels go up once I’ve taken them usually, but all of a sudden my levels are falling below 4 all the time, it seems so strange why my levels are not going up and constantly staying below 4, I eat and carb count but as soon as I eat it goes to around 4.5 and with in an hour it drops again, I don’t understand why, I’ve contacted my GP for an appointment as my body just don’t feel right,I’ve never ever had this happen to me before, I get headaches, sweating, and confusion and it’s getting me down so much, when I was discharged yesterday the DR seemed not bothered as I was on HDU and they wanted the bed, I’ve been up all night and had 4 hypos already, I just want to no why it’s happening, once again thankyou for your reply these are my readings

Hello @Christian0706
When you say bad hypos are you having problems correcting them as in having to use a lot of carbs to fix the hypo and is your blood pressure dropping when standing up?

If so I am wondering if you have developed Addison's disease due to your steroid use. There are two types of Addison's, Autoimmune and secondary due to steroid use.
If you are a driver stop driving until you sort it out as you could be in a lot of trouble due to the hypos.

Hi Sue
Thankyou for your reply, I’ve just looked up Addison’s disease and the symptoms are matching mine, in January I was in ICU with pneumonia and incubated for 10 days as I have no imuine system you could be right, do you think I should tell the Dr around this to see what he says, it’s just scaring me as the feeling is horrible, it says on your info that you have it, how do you feel and cope with it and I hope you are ok, once again thankyou

Very good point from @Pumper_Sue there @Christian0706 . Whether it’s Addisons or not, that needs ruling out and you need to speak to a doctor.

Other less serious causes could be the hot weather. I’ve lowered my doses a lot over the last few weeks and I’ve been fighting hypos too, although not as bad as yours.

But - listen to Sue and get checked out ASAP.

Thankyou Inka, it’s hard to speak to people around it as they don’t understand, this is brilliant information you guys give me as you are in the same situation

Hi @Christian0706
Once diagnosed it was a relief as treatment started straight away and I have lead a normal life with it, the secret is to remember to take your steroids on time each day 🙂

Do ask your GP to test you for Addison's as it's quite rare and very few GP's would ever see it in practice, so doubt s/he would even think about it.

Before diagnoses I was going for days without any insulin and one hypo I had it took almost 500 carbs to raise my blood sugars.
Obviously being type1 going without insulin would be a no no so something was badly wrong somewhere.

@Christian0706,
obviously it may not be Addison's as it's just a guess on my part and the comment was made on the assumption that you are lowering your insulin in accordance with the drop in steroid dose. It's amazing how much insulin is needed even for 1mg of prednisolone.
Good luck with your apt.

Hi Christian0706, welcome to the forum.

Just popping in to say hi. So glad you found us so we can offer support at what must be a scary time.

Pumper_Sue and Inka have given some great info above so I hope you get the opportunity to speak with someone so they can rule out other issues.

Do keep us updated with how you get on.
