Hi, apologies for the long post but just trying to find out if anyone has seen extreme confusion caused by incorrect insulin dose.
My mum is a 79 year old type 1 diabetic and since January her nurse has been regularly upping her insulin levels. This has coincided with her becoming gradually very confused- she thinks that there is another person living in her house and refers to them as ‘the other Mick’ (her husband is called Mick and they live together) She has phoned relatives asking where my dad is and thinks that he’s been out all night when in fact he has popped to the shop or is in another room.
We contacted her GP and she has had a memory test which was perfect, she did have a urine infection but this has been treated and is now cleared up. Today she had another moment of confusion and is still adamant that there is another person that comes into the house and confuses her. The GP has today dropped her insulin dose across the day and is going to check back with them next week. We are obviously very concerned. Any comments or experiences appreciated xx

I don't know about the Insulin but Urine Infections can definitely cause confusion in older people. Is it possible she has another infection.

Hi, thanks for replying. No she definitely doesn’t have an infection at the moment-we asked for them to retest after her antibiotics finished and it was clear.

Is anyone monitoring her blood sugar levels and if so what are they?

Hi, Thankyou. My mum is monitoring them herself. They had regularly been around 12/13 which is why they had upped her insulin. I think I’m right in saying it has now been around 5/6 although she has been finding that she is going really low during the night and so has been eating an extra supper to get her through the night recently. They are recording this week and making note of when this ‘person’ appears to share with GP on Wednesday.

Hi @Jen1876
I hope that the data that they are gathering will help them to decide on appropriate doses for your Mum. I can understand that it may be difficult if she is confused.

Thankyou. It’s just such a worry and the confusion is very much coinciding with when they started to change her insulin amounts. Hopefully this week will start to provide some answers

Sorry to hear how difficult a time your Mum is having @Jen1876

I wonder what your Mum!s BG levels are when she is confused. Does she generally have good hypo awareness?
