The other day starting 7.00 pm I had celery and celeriac soup, scampi and chips and mushy peas followed by trifle. Yes that sounds bad but I don’t make a habit of it and it was a seniors meal; the portions were small to start with and I removed the coating from half the scampi and only ate half the chips. The trifle didn’t taste very sweet and was pretty small. However my blood sugar 2 hours later was 14.9, which I didn’t really expect!! I didn’t sleep very well and still awake at 2 am I tested my blood again. It was 5.6.
My last 6 monthly reading at the doctors was 39. (I know these are different scales, sorry). So, is the fact that it came down to normal a good thing? Or is being so high a very bad thing? Confused!!

I think it illustrates that some foods can be a lot higher in carbs than you imagine and it is often the combination of foods in a meal that is a factor. However the fact that you were back down to a good level means your body coped. Perhaps something not to repeat too often but is what a non diabetic would see after a high carb meal. Making sure you drink plenty of water if you are seeing a high level will help flush the excess glucose out of your system.

The HbA1c of 39 shows that you are maintaining your diabetes through good management in the normal range. The rise to 14.9 after that meal tells you that you are still diabetic and your body can't tolerate that level of carbohydrate. Yes it was eventually able to produce enough insulin to bring it down through the night but your first phase release of insulin looks to have been overwhelmed by that meal. If you are going to treat yourself, maybe stick to just one carb rich course.

Or maybe have something fatty with it - like adding cream to the scone.
Fat delays the digestion of carbs and gives your body a chance to catch up with its insulin production.

I think there was probably a decent amount of fat in the scampi and chips and then the trifle. I seem to have missed mention of a scone? Are you confusing this post with another one @helli

Ooops. Yes, I've read too many threads after a long day of work at the end of a long week and my brain is fried.
Maybe eat more of the cream than the jelly with the trifle 🙄

Other things to consider:-
You should always double check if you get a reading which is significantly different from what you expect.
Is it possible you had some contamination on your fingers?
Was this a pub meal and what did you have to drink with it? It happens all too frequently that a diet coke order gets delivered as a regular coke.... unless you actually have it served in the bottle or can. So something like that can certainly spike levels a lot higher than you anticipate.

Thanks everyone. Tips about water and fat very helpful for future blips. But won’t be having similar meal again at least for a while!
