Type 2
Hi I am new to the forum tonight. My husband is 72 has heart condition and is diabetic type 2. He has always eaten really badly his own choice very stubborn, doesn't eat LOTS of bad things just very little but mostly not the best diet and I can't change him. He has his diabetic reviews and bloods/eyes etc and still the results they say are alright!. he has gone from diet only diabetic now type 2 on medications. Over past 12 months he has started to wake up sweating badly the bed is wet through to the mattress, he feels funny/shaky/cold/unsteady. His b/s will be 3.4. I get him a really sweet drink and chocolate then sandwich... b/s will come up fifteen mins or so to somewhere between 6-7. This is happenning more often now and it worries me. Am I doing the right things. He also has the gel if really bad but would I know what is really bad? He gas just had hypo now, bed wet through dripping in sweat like he's just got out of the shower! Sugar is 7.8 now but he has felt dizzy light headed and sat in chair asleep is he ok he says he is but dizzy etc.

Hi Amberstone, welcome to the forum 🙂 What medication is your husband on now? What may partly be responsible for these symptoms is that his body has not yet adapted to the ;lower levels he is now experiencing now that he is on medication, so it sends out distress signals that cause the sweating and shakiness. 3.4 is low, although not dangerously so - it depends on what medication he is taking, so if you can clarify that then it would help us to give you better advice - for some medications there is a possibility of dropping lower, but for others it would be highly unlikely. 3.4 mmol/l would be at the lower end of what a non-diabetic person might experience. You did the right thing giving him something sweet - usually about 15g of sugar is sufficient to raise levels sufficiently to get rid of the symptoms - I would use 3 jelly babies, but anything similar would do e.g. a small glass of fresh orange juice if he prefers of you can get glucose tablets 🙂

If you can let us know the medication, we can explain more. In any event, it would be a good idea to discuss the problems with his doctor to make sure his medication is appropriate as it may need adjusting 🙂

Thank you for your reply his medication he gas been on for approx 4 years before that it WAS diet only. He takes about 14 tablets daily due to heart condition also he regularly takes meds. They are such a lot to list but I have really told him he is scaring me, I don't want to lose him, he eats badly and is working still, he just doesn't eat properly and now having more hypo I have MADE him see GP In couple weeks appointments hard to get. I will keep in touch. Think it was shear panic I got on here but gave calmed down now, but thank you I will keep in touch.

It sounds like it is chiefly the diabetes-related medication that might need reviewing to try and avert the low blood sugars. It might also be worth getting your pharmacist to do a medication review given that he is on so many meds. These are free and available at most pharmacies - the pharmacist will be able to say if there are any likely interactions between the medications that might be contributing to the problems, they are better qualified than most GPs to identify the relationships between medications for different conditions when taken together.

Good luck, I hope that you can get things sorted out so this is no longer a worry for you both 🙂
