Hi, this is only my second post as i am very new here, only being diagnosed 2 weeks ago.

I am so confused with my levels tonight. before i ate dinner i checked my sugars which were 9.1 (high i know but pretty normal for me at the mo) did my insulin as normal and had dinner which was chicken stirfry with veg and noodles, was soo good i even had a second helping!

So here is me thinkin that my sugars would go sky high as i ate alot, yet i check themm 2 hours later and they are 3.4!!! how did this happen exactly coz i know i ate enough of it!!

Is it the case that my body is starting to produce insulin, iv heard it does this its called the honeymoon period??? or should i lower my insulin dose? im following docs orders at the mo so i dont think i should do that!

Any ideas?? thanks xx

Hiya, did you still feel full when you got the 3.4? I think noodles are quite low GI, that is they take a long time to digest, and so it could be that the insulin was the right amount, but the food was slower to digest than, say, bread would be. I had the same thing happen the first time I ate fish and chips after diagnosis!

You could try injecting after the meal next time you eat stir fry, or having hald the dose at the start and half an hour or two later. It's trial and error to work out what's right for you for different foods.

Hope that helps, feel free to pop on here and ask lots of questions!

Yes that did help, thanku!

Yea i felt full i had alot lol and its all trial and error with everything! sometimes my bg goes as high as 19 but i feel absoloutly fine,Oh i had my first hypo today....well i think i did i went all tired and my hands were really shaking so i checked my sugars and they were 2.5!! had a handful of jelly babies lol and went back to normal again...followed with some bread n butter i think i dealt with it ok 🙂

after i got that 3.4 reading i did treat myself to a mini mars bar to get back to normal again, was that naughty? god im finding the whole limited chocolate thing hard!!

xx

Questiontime!

Ooo another question, sorry for all the questions but im still tryin to work everythin out.

Im going to the cinema tomoro im just wondering what sort of stuff i can eat? can i have popcorn, if so how much, i know i cant sit there and munch a piknmix like the good old days lol but i dont exactly want to be sitting there eating nuts....or smething like that!

Maybe if i have less carbs with my dinner i can make up the extra when i eat at the cinema??

Can anyone help thanks xx

You could have had the mini-mars bar as a snack. Apparently they are useless for the hypo itself. The way they manufacture them means that you don't get a fast enough rise in your blood glucose to treat the hypo, that was what the DSN said anyway.

Hiya

What regime are you on? Have you been told about carb counting and what to do for snacks.

My daughter had salted popcorn as we find the sweet stuff takes her up (it doesn't on some other people) too high and she has a medium sized one and we allow about 55 to 60 carbs for the whole thing.

So yes popcorn is very doable but you will need insulin to cover it but I don't know what you have or haven't been told yet.

🙂

I talked to my doctor and dietitian about carb counting and they recommend i dont do it for another year! so at the moment i am taking the novarapid 3 times a day and the long lasting levemir at night, so as advised by the doc im doing:

12 units before brekfast
15 units b4 lunch
15 units b4 dinner
20 units before i go bed

I really want to learn to carb count so i have more control and can adjust my insulin but doc said no :(

so maybe i can have popcorn just not alot? i dont like the sweet kind anyway salty for me!

I do understand that carb counting is hard whilst in honeymoon (ie your pancreas may well still be working a bit and when it stops that is the end of the honeymoon, it can take a few weeks for the honeymoon to kick in though, you may find your insulin needs go down soon maybe).

Waiting a year though is ridiculous, I wonder what his thought pattern behind this is? I would love to hear it.

You can learn yourself and just look into it and just be aware of the carbs you are eating so that when you get more confident you can just do it. There are some great books out there. The Collins Gem carb counter from Amazon is a good one to start with and get yourself some flat digital scales. Flat so you can put your plate on them and then turn them on so you can weigh your food directly onto the plate, much easier.

Start having a practice and the more you do it and the more you are aware you will have no problem once you decide to start counting properly.

For example when you next have a jacket potato, cook it and then weigh it. Look in the book and work out the carbs, I have a little calculation I can let you have to work it out easier (oh you'll need a calculator as well).

The best thing to do is have some popcorn, small one maybe and test before and test a couple of hours later and see what happens. That is the best way to test any food, two hours later even if you take insulin for it.

Good luck.

Same boat

Hi,

I am also pretty new, diagnosed type 1 a couple of weeks ago. Is there maybe an average time that it takes to lower the levels. Mine are still averaging 18 to 22 at the moment?

I'm reading the replies to your questions to maybe see if I can work out how the levels relate to how I'm going to feel?

Locar - it generally takes several weeks to get the doses approximately right. If bloog glucose levels are reduced too quickly, you will feel hypoglycaemic too often, as your body has got used to higher levels. Your diabetes team will probably gradually increase doses every few days. Most people with type 1 diabetes goes through a honeymoon phase (several months) when their pancreas produces some insulin, but when it finally gives up, they need more insulin.

Another helpful thread!! I too started insulin 3.5 weeks ago, and some numbers are gradually coming into range, but still getting surprises. For example had a large breakfast yesterday, with fried potatoes and wheaten bread, I took 3 units of apidra after working out approx how many carbs were in the meal and less than 2 hours later I was 3.2!! This morning I took 2 units with 2 wheaten toast 7 Jam, and again less than 2 hours later was 2.8!!!:confused:I did have a small snack biscuit with the toast as I was anxious after yesterday, and had a long trip on the tube ahead. Im also getting very high numbers at times, despite trying to carefully work out the insulin to carb ratio, and what is inthe food etc. I suppose it does take time. I think for me carb counting is very important and the diabetes team here are very supportive. Have you been referred to a specialist nurse who can talk you through some of the issues your having?
