It's called 'Dawn Phenomenon', where your liver gives you an extra boost of glucose in the mornings and raises your levels. It's actually a good idea to eat something soon after rising (e.g. an egg or some other low-carb meal) as this 'switches off' the liver's action (not completely, you still need it to trickly out a small amount!)
