I hope im posting this correctly, still trying to find my way around this site! Can anyone tell me if when they were just trying to control their levels by diet to start with if they also tested? my nurse keeps saying i can have a machine if i want one, but will it make me paranoid or will it help! Its all very confusing and although my family are kind of being supportive it also fells like they think it is no big deal!

Its so good to read what other people in the same situation are going through. Thanks everyone 🙂

When i was first diagnosed i did use a glucose meter , if they are offering you one i would take it , some type 2's have had problems with getting a meter and the test strips from their doctors. You will find it very helpful as you will be able to see how certain foods etc effect your blood control , and then adapt your diet accordingly. Good luck and let us know how you get on . Welcome to the forum by the way ..

Hi Nikki

I'm a type two. There is a big debate about type two testing. I don't but was offered the facility. As insulinaddict says knowing your results can be very useful. I feel that I have good control with diet and lots of exercise. I have to say that I have never felt as fit.

Welcome to the site.

Hi Nickie
As insulinaddict said if the nurse has offered you a meter take it.
I am type2 myself diet controlled, the metre has done me good i have been able to controll my BGs, my readings are down from 19.1 to between 4 & 7 which i am pleased about.
It is all trial & error with new foods. i test on waking up & before meals then testing 2 hours after meals & before going to bed.
You need to keep a diary of your BGs & what you eat.
Test before your meal write down what you have had then test 2 hours later to see how high your BGs are, if you stay between 4-10 that is great.
The key is to try & test at the same time each day & eat at regular times.
Just remember to eat smaller portions everyone of us are different.
Remember carbs turn to Sugar/glucose, so go easy on them.
Hope this has helped.
I am new here myself but you will get all your questions answered noo matter how trivia they are, we have all been through the same thing. 🙂
This is my second home now.
Has your GP or Nurse mentioned an educational course think it's called Desmond course someone will correct me if i'm wrong.
I am waiting to go on this course to educate myself too.
Good to see you posting on the boards, like i say anyone will help you here they all great & very helpfull.

Yes Sweetsatin it is called DESMOND 🙂🙂

id take a meter if only to see how diffirent food effects your levels it's always nice to know your levels keeping a diary can be useful , it can also be referred to if you are seeing your GP

Thank you all. I see my nurse a week tomorrow and i think im going to get one and see how i go. I must admit im learning allready i never thought of worrying about carbs!🙂

I too used a meter for nearly 5 years whilst being diet controlled. Then used it even more when starting on Metformin.

I went staraight on to pills, but take the monitor, it helps give you bette control. There is loads of advice about what to eat and what not to eat, but we are all individuals so different things will affect us in different ways.

Don't forget the strips are also available on prescription, which even without a medical exemption certificate is cheaper than buying them.
