Hi Everyone,

I got a letter from my old doctor (we've just moved and I still have to register with my new one) here in Norway.

The letter indicated that I have somewhat high levels of cholesterol and to follow up my attached blood test results with my new doctor.

fs-Triglyseride <2,60 my level was 1,31
Hbaic <6,1 my level was 6,2
S-LDL-kolersterol 2,5-5,3 my level was 4,0
S-HDL-kolesterol 1,0-2,7 my level was 1,8
S-Kolesterol 3,9-7,8 my level was 6,1

Can anyone shed light on these results. Don't really understand if I need to go onto statins or not. I will, of course, work hard to get these down and would welcome any advice.

Hi Donna,

Can you call them and get them to explain what all the results mean and what your over all cholesterol is ? Sorry I cant shed any light on them individually. But I bet someone will be along soon to explain.

Not sure how to explain the numbers but LDL is low density lipid (the one you have to worry about) and HDL is high density lipid and is in things like rape seed oil and olive oil. I call the HDLs Happy Fats as they are the ones that are supposed to be better for you.

Total chol of 6 is a bit high I think (4 or below is the target for people prone to CHD eg diabetics - I'm currently 4.9)

I've read some stuff (never know WHAT to believe when reading about Chol) which suggests the other important factors are trigs (try to keep as low as possible) preferably below 1 and to try to keep the trigs:hdl ratio as low as possible. Preferably below 1.

Not quite sure which of your trigs figures are 'current' but if the lower one then it would suggest your ratio not too bad, but there's quite a lot of LDL (<2 is the NICE target for diabetics I think).

As far as I know the worst combo is high trigs, high ldl and low hdl.

tbh the whole chol malarkey completely confuses me!

When looking a cholesterol...

The whole figure can be miss leading to a certain extent as in yes the higher it is the more likely there is a problem.. But just like the HbA1c is really doesn't tell you much about the control side.. So you need to look at the three elements, Trigs, HDL, and LDL's amounts and ratio's to determine what the whole figure means..

The figures we work by in the uk..

Total Cholesterol < 5 mmol/l
HDL > 1.1 mmol/l
LDL < 3 mmol/l
Trig < 2.3 mmol/l

Total cholesterol/HDL ratio < 4

To work out your cholesterol/HDL ratio, divid your total cholesterol by the HDL.

So in the main you'll looking for a high HDL and a low Trig and LDL..

Looking at those results, you would be on the upper limits to what Norway considers there suitable total cholesterol levels..

Your tot chol/HDL ratio is 3.38r,

Looking at these figures it may be that your HCP's may want to introduce statins, to change the figures around, as the raito of the LDL and Trigs could be seen as being iffy, but pehaps changes in diet might reblanace these a bit better..

When it comes to statin's I think its personal choice, yes if your total cholestrol is really high then statins are good, but when they are within normal range the individual really has to decided for themselves whether they would really benefit from driving them down futher with statins..

Thanks for the replies. I have taken on your advice and texted my old surgery for some more information.

Another question, does having this disease, automatically mean raised cholesterol levels? What advice can you all offer to get my levels down to a more reasonable level?

My doctor did hint that if I carried on reducing my Hba1c, my cholesterol levels would fall too.

Can't say I'm guilty of having a bad diet, maybe I should reduced the cheese and butter and opt for even less carbs? I always use good quality olive oil and rarely eat biscuits. What else can I do, up the exercise?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated as like everyone else on this site, you go along feeling quite upbeat about stuff, then something comes along to remind you that you are not like everyone else!

Feeling a wee bit despondent !

Sorry that this has got you down Donna. It could be a blip apparently stress can affect cholesterol levels (so my GP told me) and if I recall moving house and job hunting are recent activities that you have undertaken. Thyroid function can also affect your cholesterol levels (again told to me by a GP) and thyroid levels tend to fluctuate over the year.

You have done really well with getting your HbA1c down.

{{{hugs}}}

Hi Donna

Don't get down {{{{{{hugs coming your way}}}}}.

You have had a stressful few months with house moving and your hubbies broken leg that may of caused it to go up.
