Relationship to Diabetes

Hi . Today I was informed that my second blood test in 6 months had returned with the same reading of 48mmol. I spoke to the practice nurse( can't get appointment until 23rd Nov) and asked whether this means I am classed as diabetic or not.... Given that the borderline for this is 47. The nurse wasn't sure until she spoke with the Gp. Has anyone had a similar experience or advice to offer. The 23rdcseems sling time away.

Thanks

I think you are still just in the diabetic range, but 48mmol is very good and verging on pre-diabetic. My HbA1c was 48 in February and 47 in early August (both come out at 6.5%) and at my last chat with my GP she said she reckoned I was in remission and 'diet contolled' and suggested stopping my gliclazide medication, but I said try reducing it by 50% as a start and seeing how things go and retest in 3 months. Going by my own testing I think my next HbA1c will have fallen again.
Personally I think the dividing line is largely academic and if one has 'got diabetes', falling below the dividing line only indicates it is under control either due to appropriate medication, diet, exercise or a combination of these.
Anyway, your results indicate that you are moving in the right direction. Congratulations!

Hello Roll17 and welcome to the forum. 🙂 Mine was 50 and nurse said I was pre-diabetic. I think I'm diabetic though.

Hi Thank you for your responses. I meant to say that this was the initial blood tests so I am waiting to hear whether these class me as diabetic or not? NICE states that 47 is pre diabetic whilst 48 is diabetic.
Has anyone been classed as diabetic with 48?

One of the challenges of these hard numerical boundaries I suppose.

I guess you should continue to respond/adjust your diet and attempt to be more active as if you were diabetic, and see whether you can reduce your HbA1c still further.

I believe there is good research evidence that better BG management immediately after diagnosis leads to singicicantly improved long-term outcomes - so it would be in your interest to keep going, whether they decide to put a tick in the box or not 🙂

My GP uses the 48 (6.5) as a qualifying diabetic diagnosis. Once that level is hit, you’re on the Diabetic radar with foot and eye checks and minimum annual Hba1c’s. I’ve only ever had one level over 48 at diagnosis and since then it’s been 44, 41, 40 and 42 but I’m diabetic.

We do have a member on here who was diagnosed under 48 but I honestly think that was an error and too quick off the mark.

I’d tend to just use it as an opportunity to adjust my diet because whilst 47/48 isn’t bad, there still could be some pretty high spikes in there leading to the overall average. There’s a belief that diabetic complications can begin even in the pre-diabetic range so it’s best to aim to under 42. Best wishes.

As an Hba1c of 50 equates to an average of 8.1 on the daily meter, I don’t think your nurse is right Ditto. However your levels since diagnosis look much better and you’re certainly keeping yourself in pre-diabetic range most of the time 😛

I cheat! I never measure when I'm pigging out! 😱
