i have been learning to drive since january, when i was diagnosed i spoke to the diabetes nurse and she said i would be fine to drive as long as my vision is fine and i check my blood sugar before. i emailed the dvla and told them the situation and they sent me some medical forms to fill out. the problem i am having is that these forms seem to be written for people with full drivers licence who have had diabetes long enough to know if they have any problems that might affect their driving also at the bottom of the form before i sign it says "i have enclosed my licence" if i send them my licence then surely i will have to stop lessons until i get it back. really confused and only have 10 days left to send the form back any help would be greatly recieved

Have you read the notes that came with the forms. I know on the renewal forms you are allowed to keep the license but there is a box to tick.

Last time I renewed it was apparent I would not hear from the DVLA about my licence till after the expiry date. They asked me a couple of questions, and said I could drive providing I had not been told by a Dr that I could not. Having a valid renewal in the system was enough - but they said they would send me a letter saying I was OK to drive which I could carry until I got their decision. If you ring them they will let you know, I imagine it would be along the same lines.

I have to admit slight confusion. Do you have a provisional licence? If you had diabetes before applying you would have had to go through the "medical checks" process before it was issued. If you developed it after you would have to return the provisional licence but been allowed to continue learning unless otherwise advised by health professionals.
