Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hellooooooo
I’ve just had a 77 result after being 44-46 last year....
Broke my ankle just before Christmas so I’ve been slightly immobile!
Need to sort myself out in 3 months or medication is going to happen!
So.... ok.... I’ve been eating c**p and I know I shouldn’t..... Had operation to remove spleen and part of my pancreas 3 years ago.
Tried the SlimmingWorld diet and liked it...... But is it good for diabetes control? Are the ready meals loaded with sugar?
I would appreciate any advise folks xx

Hi @taffy69
Sounds like you have had a rough ride! Personally I didn’t find slimming world helpful, I was on it when I got my diagnosis a year ago, thought I was doing great with my free foods, pasta, rice and loads of fruit.....little did I know that it was the carbs that were causing the problem. I spent hours when I found this forum, reading back posts, watching what others posted and greedily reading the responses. I then chose to cut out all rice, pasta, potatoes and the only bread I eat is a soy and linseed low carb loaf called Burgen.
It was hard at the start and I was convinced for about a week that I was going to starve to death 😱 but now I am a year on, 4 stone lighter and loving my food, I wouldn’t go back to eating carbs no matter what. I sleep better, have no bloating, no more acid reflux

P.s. my bloods are now in normal range and I’m being taken off my metformin :D

Really appreciate your response.

Is it all carbs ( bread, rice, pasta) l need to avoid? Or is it swapping processed white breads pasta etc that I need to do?
And very many congratulations on what you have achieved....... Brilliant

Our body uses carbs like sugar so they are best kept to a minimum, the worse kind are white rice, pasta, potatoes and bread, of course cake and biscuits have the added sugar on top so really not good. The good news is that if you go low carb, you can eat the good fats, cheese, butter, bacon and eggs 😛 protein is good so any meat. Beware of fruit because of the natural sugar, rule of thumb is two small pieces a day. Many people can tolerate some berries but sadly they don’t work for me :( Avoid low fat yoghurts as they are often higher in sugar, go for a full fat Greek yoghurt with a few almonds or berries. There is a great thread about meals so do have a look.
I love a good salad with avocado and an olive oil and lemon dressing, or stir fry veg with a steak 😛 Breakfast is either a fry up, scrambled egg on Burgen toast or if I’m in a hurry, just a couple of slices of Burgen toast with peanut butter.
With veg, again a rule of thumb is if it grows in the ground (carrots, parsnips etc) best avoid or minimum, if it grows on the ground (cabbage, asparagus ets) it’s probably ok, above the ground (sweet corn, peas etc) again best avoid or minimal.
Best thing to do it test your bg before your meal, then again 2 hours later and track in a food diary, if you are getting a rise of more than 2 then tweak the meal and try again. You will soon work out what works for you :D

I’m doing slimming world and finding it fine. I’ve just reduced or cut out the ‘bad’ carbs.

Most here will tell you to steer clear of it but I’d you are creative it can work.
