Type 2
I was diagnosed last Wednesday with type 2 and told to come back this week as I'd had it too long to be controlled by diet and would need to take tablets , GP said I would need to go to clinic and have blood tests etc.
Gone back today to see same Doc to be told it's not recommended to start tabs straight away, next blood test in 3 months, no need for clinic but would be referred to DESMOND (Ithink that's what he called it!) and eye clinic but that it could be a while before I hear from them. I just wish I had taken someone with me on both occassions as I am not sure whether to be concerned about the sudden about face or just go with it. On the plus side I have lost 4lb
 
So did he do any blood tests before he did his U-turn, especially a fingerprick one using his meter, and if so, what was the result?

And are you doing your own fingerprick tests?

Cos without that - yes I would be worried, frankly.

Weight loss is great Jackie so you're clearly doing something right - trouble is of course - don't know if it's enough, or not, do we?

No finger tip test done, nothing to do my own tests with. The only thing I came away with was cream for a fungal infection on my foot.

I don't want to make out like my type 2 is worse than it is but feel he sorta really didn't seem to think there was anything to worry about.

I asked about my initial blood test as I had not been offered any information, he said my HbA1c was 86 which to be honest means very little to me apart from he said it should be 40 and 48 or above indicates diabetes.
 
I am wondering how the doctor knew how long you've been diabetic so he could tell you how to treat it.
My Hba1c was 91 at diagnosis and 47 after 80 days, then 41 at 6 months.
I was sent on a diabetes education course - three sessions which were quite frankly dangerous. There was a couple there and the man was really ill, and it was all about eating carb heavy starchy foods - potatoes and baked beans - they weren't there for the third session and I was rather concerned that they'd taken the advice.
I got hold of a testing meter, kept my BG levels down to below 8mmol/l to find out what I could eat, and then stayed on that menu. My levels kept on going down, and so I have been normal for the last 6 months.
I know it might seem very smug, but I only have to stick to eating low carb foods and I'm just fine. I was prescribed tablets, but was really ill, and am a lot better off without them.
 
Today has been a bigger rollercoaster than finding out last week, I have had a bit of a wobbler in the guise of a tuna mayo sarnie, bag of crisps and a piece of lemon drizzle cake then felt like I am really old enough to know better than to do this to myself. I'm guessing he is putting it down to all the illnesses I have had over the last 12 months (from being reasonabley healthy) and my inability to recover as quickly as I should.

I will go on the course but if I don't like what I hear then that will be the end of it. I'm just going to get on with what I have to do and hopefully I can see a different doc if I need to go back.

It sounds like you have done an amazing job and hopefully sticking to low carbs will have the same benefits for me.
 
There are different courses across the country. Some sound dreadful. Others are better.
I was given tablets straight away. Some are, some aren't.
 
Had to go back to see GP on friday with yet another infection, saw a different Doc to last time. I explained my concern about my diagnosis and he said he had a different view to the last Doctor I saw and would like me to start on Metformin straight away, he said it would be a mamoth task to get my HbA1c of 86 down to an acceptable level with just diet alone. I feel much more positive and my sugar free, very low carb diet is working well for me. To be honest I am enjoying cooking from scratch again as I had got out of the habit when the kids left home. Cooked ham is my go to snack now instead of chocolates and crisps......... I never, ever thought that could happen 🙂
 
Welcome Jackie. I went on a prevention course and was not happy with the Eat Well plate as I felt there was too much emphasis on carbs. I found better advice here but did attend the course as they did the hba1cs.
 
My doctor has not wanted to see me since diagnosis - they have their opinions, and they don't like to be proven wrong.
My drop from 91 to normal was so easy it was laughable.
It was quite a shock at the time, though - getting my results from the receptionist I did not know if I should laugh or cry - so I did both.
