Ok, i'm looking at a tin of tuna chunks in brine.

Sainsbury's nutrition info says this:

Nutrition

Energy - drained per 100g = 113kcal
per 1/2 can = 73kcal (doesn't say if this is drained)

The tin is 185g.

So the calories in this tin (drained) would be : 209? Right? Or wrong?

And why would the calories be lower when it is drained?

thats what i got, and it is different drained because of the weight differences when the liquid is present............

I could be being daft here but the total calories in the can are

73 * 2 which is 146

This would be a drained weight of about 129g

(1.29 *113) come out to approx 146

To get 209 you would be muliplying the non-drained weight 185g by the calories of the the drained weight per 100g. (1.85 *113)

I am having a stressful day to day so may well have mucked that up.

Edit to add - the calories are given for the drained weight as it is assumed that everyone will drain the can. Same with things like peas.

Ok, I know where I was going wrong. I was multiplying the drained per 100g by the weight of the item 185g (i.e. 113x1.85), but the 185g is not draigned.

So the answer would be per 1/2 can = 73kcal, therefore a can drained would be 146.

Ok i got it now. Shame it wasn't 209. :( 🙂
