Hi there everyone
I am very confused about my bg readings, on waking each morning my bg is usually between 4.2-5.6....I have my wheatabix for breakfast, two hours later it reads 7.2 - 7.6, i walk to work at a steady pace which is about 15 mins away, on arrival i feel a headache comming on & get disorientated so i check my bg it reads anything from 4.0.-5.1 so it plumits quickly.
Tonight i took my bg reading it was 5.1 two hours later it reads 5.4 after eating a mushroom & bacon omlette with a bit of salad. this seems wrong to me.
Could my contour metre be wrong?
Also my diabetic nurse said as i dont take any medication i won't get a hypo is this right? If so why do i get these symptons.? When i was 1st diagnosed a few weeks ago the highest reading was 19.1, since then i have kept my bg down between 4.0 - 9.0 so quite pleased really i think that is good going.
Any advice would be great.

Those numbers seem pretty good to me, what doesn't seem right about them? There would have been very little in the way of carbs in the omlette and salad so you wouldn't expect to see much of an increase I would have thought.
Does your meter have a control solution, if you're concerned of its accuracy it'd be worth using it to reassure yourself.
Technically anyone, diabetic or otherwise, could become hypoglyceamic in the sense that their sugars can go below 4, however in a sense this is perfectly acceptable and the concern with hypogycaemia is if it's caused by medication (either too much or not being matched with carbs) it has the potential to be worse. As your body is used to higher numbers the target numbers you are achiving (well done!) will be unusual for you so it's normal to feel hypo even when you're not, once your body is used to being at this level they should clear up

Hi, Sorry i cant comment much about type 2 - but i just wanted to say that your levels are very good and that you must be doing something right! You may not technically go under 4 as a type 2 (?) - but if you drop quickly from a high number you may feel the same symptoms as you would if you had a hypo. 🙂 Bev x

Hi Anita, those numbers are actually pretty nifty! As others have said, you may feel the hypo effects when your levels drop to 'normal' range after being high for some time. Things will settle down as you become used to the new (and excellent!) levels. Do you have more than one meter? Might be worth trying to get one from DSN or an online offer just for reassurance.

Dear sweetsatin,

The numbers that you have quoted sound excellent, as others have said there is really nothing to worry about. The fact that your levels return to normal, 2 hours and fifteen minutes after your breakfast is good - the excercise helps. I think your insulin response to carbohydrates you eat is pretty robust - well done.

Thank you everyone for your comments & advice
Feeling much better now🙂
I have spoken to my DSN & she apolagised for telling me to eat when my readings were low, which meant eating every one & half hours when working.
I have now been advised to not test my BG at all & eat just a little more at meal times so i don't feel hungry in between meals & if i do get hungry just eat a peice of fruit which i do anyway.
I was also told i won't get any hypos as i am diet controlled only... but will have the symptoms that will pass in time.
Sorry for all the questions but if i don't ask i won't know will i hehe!
I now feel that if i don't take my BGs i won't know weather i'm high or low so just for peace of mind i will take them on waking in the morning & again before bed.

Glad to hear you have been reassured. I think your DSN is wrong on the not testing at all though. Maybe you don't need to test every day but I think it's important to still test when eating new foods and do some fasting and after meal testing.

glad to hear your feeling alot better x

I once had a hypo when only diet and exercise control. I tested before doing an exercise DVD and then again afterwards and I was feeling rough, i was under 4.

Thanks for that info Grovesy i will test for peace of mind

I totally agree , if I have any doubt I always test , sometimes Ive been high

sometimes Hypo . I would rather use a strip and be sure rather than risk a

severe hypo .

Dear sweetsatin,

My DSN wanted me not to test but I told her that I used the results to modify my dietary choices (see Jenny Ruhl's book) - she relented.
