Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi. Was diagnosed with type 2 in April. Need to go way back. In my early 20s was diagnosed with hypoglycemia and told to eat slow release carbs. Also had ME at the time. Didn't have kids til my late 30s cos of health. Got gestational diabetes with second child then bg normal after birth. So never been very good controlling bg levels. Just turned 50 and put a bit of weight on during lockdown. Hba1c was 91 then 63 now 43. Lost 1stone 8lbs. On Metformin twice a day. GP was really pleased. But told him I've had a few hypos so now referred me to diabetic clinic. He also referred me for liver/pancreatic scan. It's because I told him stools have been a bit loose since starting metformin and some occasions can be a bit paler in colour but then normal again. He thinks it's the meds but referred me anyway. Unfortunately I went on Dr Google which now has me believing I've got liver disease or pancreatic cancer or both. All my blood results are normal but I have a terrible mistrust of Drs having been misdiagnosed for yrs before ME diagnosis and was ill at 14 but not believed for months until eventually blood test showed glandular fever. Used to avoid Drs as much as possible and now finding it difficult having to go to appts and having tests. Really having to face my fears but have a very supportive husband and family. Was diagnosed with Health Anxiety years ago but can feel it starting to take control of me again. Used to offload to my lovely Mum but just lost her to dementia.

Metformin is notorious for causing sometimes violent internal upsets - a bit loose is not the usual description by any means.
Your GP seems to be being cautious, which is a good thing really.
It would be unusual for an ordinary type 2 on Metformin to have hypos - has there been mention of reactive hypoglycaemia? Did you measure your blood glucose at the time?

No never heard of that. Tested bg and was 4.5, 4.7 4.9. Didn't think these were particularly low but gave me the symptoms. Once went down to 3.7.

Hi SharonW, welcome to the forum.

Glad you've joined as you seem to have been through a lot recently so it's no wonder you're feeling anxious.

Dr Google may be a bit over zealous so it's worth letting your GP get through the tests and keep discussing your concerns with them so they can investigate and get to the bottom of things.

You sound as though you're in good hands and I know it's easier said than done but do try and relax and keep in touch with the diabetic clinic as much as possible so they can advise on the best way forward.

Strange - your GP should have been reassuring if you saw those numbers - but they are a very mixed bag and you never know what you're going to get.

Hi @SharonW

Those readings are in range apart from the 3.7 so I am surprised that the GP wasn’t more reassuring. Good to find out reasons for hypos so good to know that they are following up your concerns.

If you have been higher before your body might take time to get used to these levels so on some occasions you might feel as if you are hypo when you are not. MIT is good that you are able to check your actual levels.

Let us know how you get on
