Relationship to Diabetes

Hi Guys - I went for my weight in at slimming world - lost half a pound in two weeks! Compared to losing over a stone in the past month. I understand the body goes through a plateau. I am coming to terms with being a diabetic! Yep I know what I said in a previous post. However, I think this is a way of desensitizing the word. I was told not to be too hard on myself, and I am not.

I got some comfort in the fact my best friends dad has had it for 18 years and is still only on Metformin. I should probably post a daily blog via this message just stating how I am coming along and things. I am trying to take it easy, however, I just cant understand why and how it threw me off like this..

Hope the weight loss starts to speed up again soon! As you have been feeling low, this might have had an effect on your motivation and this might explain why you have hit this plateau. It's difficult living with any long-term condition, and you will always have times when you feel angry or down about it, but hopefully as your familiarity with things grows it will become more of a nuisance and you will reap the rewards of your new approach to your diet and exercise 🙂 For many people the diagnosis can be a turning point leading to a happier and healthier future, despite the diabetes, so I will wish this for you 🙂

Keep posting and letting us know how you are doing!

Yes, putting your thoughts into words can help you understand your own feelings better. So post away. I think we can tend to be a bit hard on ourselves and expect to do the right thing all the time. One thing I've learned since joining this forum is that even the best of us gets down from time to time. I know sometimes I feel on top of things but I often feel bogged down and fed up with it all too. It does have a knock on effect on the way we deal with things. Take care and I hope the weight loss picks up again soon. In the meantime, remember that half a pound lost is better than half a pound gained. 🙂 XXXXX

Hi Rustee. I too am relatively new to all of this and know how you feel. You have done really well and shouldn't be too hard on yourself. 🙂I follow the principles of Slimming World for my weight loss too, but beware green days where you can eat as much as you like in terms of carbs as obviously this is something we can no longer do! Portion size has helped me to continue to lose weight and I know that so called 'free foods' can be eated freely on the plan, but we do need to limit them. I tend to stick to porridge for breakfast, lean meat or fish and salad and fruit or yogurt for lunch and meat or fish, a small portion of new potatoes or wholewheat pasta and plenty of veg for dinner. This seems to work well for me. What about you? The best of luck and don't be disheartened. The weight will start to come off again. Oh and by the way don't forget to add a bit more exercise in, this will help too! Katiexx

Thanks Guys for your support and understanding. The plateau could be down to other things as well. After all, when I started walking, the weight was dropping off literally. I understand that a plateau is reached and before another change is required. Today was one of the first times I have started to look into my depression and turn it into a positive, to stop seeing it as an enemy or and see it as telling me that something is not right. I used to write poetry a lot before, I should write about the depression and the thoughts that come to mind.....

I thought at first I was spending a little too much time on the forum. However, it does help me. I patched things up with my sister, I thought she was berating me - she wasn't. She said that as my original HbA1c reading was marginal (7.9%). There is every possibility I could reverse it by losing more weight. While that may be true, I dont want to put myself in that denial and deception stage again. Diabetes is a serious condition, and I am trying to come to terms with it. I am BLOODY SCARED! Being such a controlled person who really shows his emotions that is a big step to take. Plus I also finally admitted to myself that I am gay/bisexual is another step also. Now that is ANOTHER BIG STEP even putting this down in the open......Also I thought that being a Reiki Master, I would be able to handle this and not get into a state...............

You're making some very big and very brace decisions at the moment rustee, so it is good that you are seeking help and support at this difficult time. You will come to terms with your diabetes, I am sure, just keep talking to us and asking any questions or concerns you may have. In time you may find that you are feeling more positive about your diabetes and the future, and find yourself coming here to help others who were once in your situation 🙂
