I am 3 months in being diabetic and am trying to get down to exercise and diet only.I have stopped taking evening metformin last Thursday and sugars are still ok. have now stopped morning as well (forgot tablet on Monday) and still so far sugars are in range so hoefully I might get away without them!

morning readings thurs 5.6, fri 6.1 sat 6.1 sun 5.8 mon 6.7 tues 6.2 wed 6.1
night before bed thurs 7.6,fri 6.2,sat 8.2 (chinese) sun 6.7, mon 6.7 tues7.1

Awaiting 3rd H1bac results taken on 23 oct.

ist was 14 on 20/7
second 9.2 on 11/9
so hoping this is even lower.

anyone had any problems coming off metformin?

I've never been on metformin, but just wanted to congratulate you on your efforts! Well done! 🙂

I'm also hoping to come off it soon - weight loss, diet and exercise have helped. Good luck!

Well done Linda and LeeLee

Really hope you get a good result with your next HBA1c.

I was down to 6% last time but still take 2. Interested to see what happens if you come off completly as I discussed this with pratice diabetic nurse. When I'm next due to have a HBA1c test in the New year if still same or even better I'm going to reduce to 1 tablet a day.

I did ask about coming off completly & she said she & GP felt should stay on 1 as it has been shown to protect your heart long-term. As quite a bit of heart trouble on my dad's side as well as type 2 diabetes I'll probably agree to stay on it.

I'm not required to test but do every now & then my fasting amounts are normally high 6's. During the day they look more like yours. I have been as low as 4 after going to the gym.

Take care

thanks for all well wishes - has entailed strict diet changes - no more cakes, biscuits etc (although still have chinese but lot less rice)(i used to eat a lot of cakes and sweet stuff)

Fasting sugars at diagnosis were 16's and 15's though they came down to 10's after 1 tablet a daywithin about 10 days. Diagnosis was made after level of 31 in blood test for something else and then tessting 21 in surgery 3 hours later.

now dropping to 4's and 5's pre dinner and pre tea and can see no change yet but will keep close eye on levels 🙂

Hi Linda

Well done you! Please be aware that it will take approx 3 weeks for Metformin to completely leave your system, so keep a keen eye on your numbers in case they start to rise as the metformin clears your system. Good luck!

SNAP!! It took me three months before I stopped taking the metformin too. 🙂

I had no problems whatsoever coming of it, other than trying to persuade the consultant and GP that I didn't want to start taking them again!

One thing to be aware of though. It will take some time before the metformin is out of your system (I seem to remember someone saying days), so you may get a blip on the BG front. But ... hopefully not!!

Well done on your progress by the way.

Andy 🙂

p.s. Just seen the previous post!! :D

THANKS FOR THAT ADVICE - AM KEEPING TABS ON SUGARS

H1bac result from 23/10 7.1! cholestrol down to 5.5 from 7.3 3months ago by diet alone🙂
