Hi
I am new to the forum, I have been a type two diabetic for 10 years due too being overweight, I have lost over 3 stone and currently weigh 16stone 11.
My last blood test revealed I was only border line diabetic , I currently take 1 glicaside in the morning and 4 glucophage at night. I. Would like to reduce this and am seeing my diabetes nurse on Friday.
I would love to hear from others who have reduced their medication.
Thanks

Hi @Choc lover and a very warm welcome to you 🙂
If you have had a recent blood test that has reduced your HbA1c to borderline, sounds like you have already been quite successful in reducing your BG levels well. Have you been on the above medication since diagnosis?
Sure there are some others here who have changed their medication in some way since they were first diagnosed?

Well done, @Choc lover (mmmm, choc....🙂), that's good news. I stopped taking Metformin just over two years ago by just losing a bit of weight by diet & exercise, and hope to keep going like this (though the exercise has tailed off a bit recently, especially in the cold weather...). It's a fabulous feeling when you can stop taking medication, so I wish you well.

And welcome to the forum, which is a great place for support!

Thanks for your responses in reply yo Hannah , I have been on the same meds for at least 5 years previously just Metformin. Thanks Pine Marten for your encouragement.

HI @Choc lover It can be done!! Today is my first med free day for over a year. I am off the metformin and Atrovastatin and I feel over the moon. I have achieved this by listening to and abiding by the excellent advice given on this forum. Sounds like you are on the right road already. Can you look at cutting your carbs further? There are lots of tips in the food / carbs section.

Good luck, you can do it!

Hi @Choc lover i managed to come off my meds 3 months after being diagnosed by following advice on this forum and going low carb high fat xx

Thanks for all your support, I spoke to my diabetic nurse on Friday who said my last blood sugar reading was 44 and that I need to see the Head nurse before reducing meds, so fingers crossed she will agree.

It definitely can be done @Choc lover
I came off or should I say was taen off, after 3 months when my HbA1C came down from 78 to 33
So be positive and I am sure they wil take you off

I was put on gliclazide when i was diagnosed with a hba1c of 96. Went down to 43 after 3 months. I did have to work hard at this though. Lost about 2 stone and altered diet quite a bit. Nurse said i should definately come off the meds.

After coming off drugs my bloods are ok. A touch higher but havent shot up. Diet and exercise is the key. At a hba1c of 44 i'd be pushing to come off meds. If you find they go back up at least you'll know. But should certainly be explored.

If the nurse doesnt want you off meds keep up the hard work and it should continue to reduce.
