Cold

Unfortunately viruses can impact blood sugar, causing it to go much higher than usual. What treatment are you on?
Hopefully corrections will help soon and you'll feel better and be back to normal in a few days.
Colds can be particularly frustrating for us!

i find that if i have a cold/flu my bg shoots up a bit
hope u feel better soon

I had a cold which started end of September and didn't finish till well into November. It was my first of the year and my first as a diabetic. It was effectively a snot fest. The catarrh kept going down my throat causing coughing and my first ever sinusitis. My bg was a bit high but I had only been taking medication for four weeks. My hba1c was 51 at that time. I was new to testing and to complicate matters I was put on steroids prior to a cataract op at end of October. Just a two week dose and it raised my BG. After 4 weeks I bought a sugar free cough medicine. Until then I took paracetamol and a separate antihistamine.

I am just recovering from a heavy cold (tested negative for Covid in the early days, but wonder if it may have been a false negative) and surprisingly my levels haven't been particularly raised, but I have done quite a bit of physical activity throughout (by necessity) which has been a struggle but may have kept levels down.

All you can do is use your insulin to deal with it. I usually find increasing my basal is more effective and less frustrating than fighting it with corrections, but Levemir is more responsive than longer acting basal insulins, so it is easier to adjust up and down as necessary. Not sure if I would do that if I was using Tresiba or Toujeo.

I either need more insulin 'in spades' or such a minute amount more, it's negligible so I don't adjust it.

Thing is, if it's something that will definitely last longer than 'today' really truly, better to very slightly increase the basal - however with a pump this can be easier than with MDI - eg TBR of 110% for 24 hrs. Closed loop does it itself, it'll give you more if you need more then if that's worked too well it gives you nil for a while.

I remarked to the lady on the Helpline yesterday - I'm used to knowing exactly what my pump is doing and precisely why it's doing it - so just completely trusting the new one is more than a bit alien!

It’s more round meal times, not that I’m eating much at the moment. I was in green all night fairly straight line, did take xtra unit off nova this morning

I had a throat infection over Christmas (great timing!) and BG was never below 9.5 - I'd test for Ketones regularly too - hopefully you'll be better soon - have you been told about the "Sick-Day Rules"?

These are the sick day rules (TDD stands for total Daily Dose) which is the average amount of insulin (Basal & Blous) taken each day - the most important bit is the Ketones - basically if they are over 1.5 mmol/L then you need to take more insulin

This thread has the best description of the rules: https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/sick-day-rules.85644/

I think some DSNs tweak them per person but many don't.
I was first exposed to them during my local equivalent of DAFNE which was 12 years after my diagnosis.
Thank you
Good - 0.1 is nothing to worry about

I’ve got the horrible cold too and miserable sinusitis. In the early days of it, I found I needed to adjust my mealtime boluses slightly @Woodywoodpecker The adjustments I made were small but they helped reduce any larger than normal spike.

I’d also add that if you’re not eating much, your body might be pumping out some glucose, which could be contributing to any higher sugars.

It is awful thought myself lucky had avoided it over Christmas. Have put insulin for meals up, seem to be shooting up then crashing down today. Not got much off an appetite hubby trying to force feed me, nothing puts him off his food. Hopefully am coming through worst off it, just tired and bit chesty cough now, hope your on the mend soon as well

@Inka I'm desperately hoping I don't get another cold! I was totally stressed with the last one especially the first bout of sinusitus as I had cataract op due at end of October and knew I would be put on steroids beforehand. The sinusitis was a shock but I squirted seawater up my nostril for five days ( bought a canister from Boots didn't go to the sea) and it dissappeared! Luckily it was only one side of my face but it was the same side as eye operation. Heard yesterday next op in four weeks so keeping fingers and toes crossed.
