Hi all sory if this sounds stupid but I've heard that coffee and diet coke aren't good for BMs because they raise them any suggestions on good decaf and how does Tea affect it?
Coffee seems to raise my BGs a little, tea doesn't for some reason and I can't abide diet coke though coke zero is OK. Some folk seem to get a rise with tea as well so you'd need to test to find out what it does to you. Don't like decaf either, so I can't help you with that.
Lattes and cappuccinos always raise my blood glucose but that's down to the milk content not the caffeine, I get no rise from tea (which I have with the tiniest drop of milk) cola or s/f redbull / energy drinks
The best thing to do is probably test yourself to see how it affects you. I seem to recall one of the diabetes book authors (not sure which one and can't google it right now) did a test comparing decaf to caffeinated coffee and found there was little difference.
The caffeine can apparently raise the blood glucose levels because its a stimulant. Of course any carbs (milk, etc) in the coffee will also raise your blood glucose level.
Most tea's also contains caffeine - including green tea (in fact more caffeine then some coffees).
For decaf drinks you can have most herbal teas, red bush/rooibos tea and camomile tea. Most of those can be drunk without milk as well.
I have never given it much thought, but I have fresh [not instant] black coffee for breakfast and espresso midday, no milk or sweeteners, my average BG is about 6.5 after 2 hours.
I intend to stay with my coffee [black] IMO having all the extra's such as full fat milk in the latte's and cappuccino makes a difference😎
I did some experimenting and found that caffeine has no impact for me, weirdly a Costa latte and cappuccino both gave me a BG rise (not much though) but Starbucks latte and cappuccino didn't. I repeated the experiment just to make sure it wasn't a fluke and it wasn't. I can only guess that Costa put more milk in their drinks (they certainly weren't strong enough for me). My final experiment was a skinny latte v a non-skinny, the skinny made me spike the other didn't guessing my body likes the fat
I also tried having a sugar in my coffee (mostly don't have sugar but sometimes I like it), no impact at all, but an iced tea with no milk and a snit of honey did give me a moderate spike 🙄 Then again, melon which is a lower carb fruit had a fairly big impact on my BG and cherries which are much higher carb didn't so clearly it's all very individual! The coffee tasting project was fun though, I recommend it 🙂. I quite obviously need to get me a job though because I'm making projects out of nothing now 😱
Hi Laura,
Sainsbury's decaff tea is nice, being menopausal I'v cut out as much caffeine as poss. as its very bad for the old bladder. Caffeine content is very interesting, I googled it 🙂
