Have had t1 diabetes for almost two years but was diagnosed as coeliac last week following biopsies. I am relieved to have finally got to the bottom of my ongoing issues (lack of energy etc). I would encourage anyone who continues to feel unwell following diabetes diagnosis to get properly investigated for coeliac for which blood tests are not wholly reliable. Onwards and upwards.....

I agree, my daughter was diagnosed a couple of months ago and her energy levels are so much better, she continues to improve and has adapted well to the change in diet too. Onwards and upwards indeed! 🙂🙂

I'm pleased you are now feeling better. Type 1 for 24 years and diagnosed one year ago with Coeliac. I felt so ill lasr year with muliple symptoms. After looking online at stomach probles I suggesred being tested for Coeliac and once I was diagnosed I started to
Reco?ver after a few months. As you say onwards and upwards 🙂 good luck.

Thanks all. The one good thing that results from being coeliac is that my bg control has improved.

I get the impression there are lots of undiagnosed coeliacs out there. I had to visit a new GP independently to get referred to a gastroenterolist who was thorough enough to work it out. Feeling quite a lot better after 1.5 weeks without gluten but the new diet is clearly going to be tough.

I also thought the diet would be tuff, but no it's just back to basics and cook everything from scratch.
Today's dinner was roast lamb and spuds, peas and carrots and peaches for pudding.

What sort of other tests do they do apart from bloods? They tested me for this last year through a blood test but it can back negative. No energy and constant stomach upsets for a long time now. GP says IBS but guessing the symptoms can be similar?

Hi Riri, they normally do bloods which are not that accurate and also an endoscopy. I had a few of the blood tests over the years always negative same as the endoscopy result.
My diagnoses came from the skin rash which I had, it had driven me round the bend for years. I just became so fed up with feeling so ill all the time I just went gluten and wheat free on a Tuesday and on the Thursday rang GP and told him what I had done and how well I felt, so more tests done and yet again results negative except for the improvement in the rash I had.
So I had my diagnoses that way.
This is an interesting article http://jnnp.bmj.com/content/72/5/560.full well worth a read.
Don't let your GP fob you off though, ask for a referral if you are not happy.

I was diagnosed based on the results of an endoscopy, which showed that my intestines were damaged (the villi which absorb nutrients were not normal). I had previously had blood tests which came back negative.

Symptoms were an upset stomach, fatigue, rash on my arm. Stopping gluten had a remarkable impact on my energy levels.
