Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi wonder if there is anyone who has type 1 diabetes and coeliac disease. I have just had my biasops results which confirm I have coeliac disease and I'm quite worried as it seems as though there is going to be nothing I can eat. Anyone got any ideas

Hi Tina, it's quite common I think to be diagnosed with both diabetes and coeliac. I'll move this to the general messageboard so people are more likely to see it. 🙂

It's common for diabetes and coeliac connected. Strangely I'm a coeliac, no diabetes for 32 years and my daughter was diagnosed type 1 two and half years ago, she isn't coeliac so far. Sometimes I feel it's my fault she got diabetes because of my coeliac!

The chap I work with is and he seems to manage quite well with stuff although he doesn't have the dreaded D too. I have met folks that are one or the other and a few who are both.

All have said it is trial and error and as in all things you soon learn what you can have and what to avoid.

I know some shops do a gluten free range so it is worth a look when you shop. I believe there is a support forum some place too, but not sure where. Sorry this is not of more help. I hope you get help soon.

There are some gluten free foods available on prescription, it's a lot cheaper from shops. Take one day at a time then sooner or later it will get easier.

Coeliac UK website is http://www.coeliac.org.uk/ Links to helpline, services, where to buy gluten freen items, getting items on prescription etc.

Thanks for all the advise I'm meeting someone late this week who is a coeliac and is going to give me some help and advice and give me a better understanding I will be able to get some of the food on prescription once I see the specialist doctor

Hi Tina I have just been daignosed as well,on 1st November. It is hard at themoment and it is expensive to buy products, but there are foods out there. I found Asdas prawn crackers at 50p a bag a real bargain🙂 just as an emample. A small genius loaf of bread cost me ?2.99!!! but I bought a great hard back recipe book from The Works in my town called wheat, gluten and dairy free with over 70 recipes. at only ?3.99.
If there is anything I can do to help, just ask, as two heads are better than one. Take care and best wishes

Well I've been gluten free a few weeks now and found a few things I really like eating but I'm always stavin which ain't very good and my blood sugars are all over the place:(

I'm Coeliac and diabetic type 1

Hi I've had coeliac since February and diabetes type 1 since I was 3 and a half (9 years ago). To start with I thought exactly the same as you but have now found that even in the past few months what is available to me has expanded. I find that Waitrose is quite good and most of the other big supermarkets have a decent 'Free-From' selection, particularly Sainsbury's. Morrison's is good for things like chocolate bars and snacks. I kept a list of foods that I liked and where they were from to start with so that I could remember the good shops but since the variety of foods we can eat has grown I find I do not need to use this any more. Most Asda crisps do not have gluten in so I can eat most of those. Marks and Spencer also have some lovely sausages that we can eat (just check the packet to make sure!) they have also got a few things like cakes and tubs of choclatey things!

Hope this helps

The black farmer and his daughter do glueten free sausages as well. They are scrummy. 🙂

hi, i am also type 1 and coeliac!!!! was digagnosed type 1 just over 18 months ago and then been coeliac since jan!!

its isnt that bad, you really just learn to live with it!! i would say it costs more to live and eating out can be differecult. but more places are being friendly to us, bella italina have a whole menu for us, pizza hut and dominos do gluten free!!!

if anything being both coeliac and diabetic has made me a lot healthier as it makes you think about what your eating, i have lost nearly a stone in weight with out even trying.

my blood sugars have been fine, last hab1c was 5.8 so all good! you just have to be aware that gluten free products can have different carb value to their sub. so carb and cal book doesnt always cover our food as not always like for like!!!

i get food on prescribtion, my gps can be a bit differecult with it but i just put my foot down, so i get wabourtons cobs, flour, pizza bases, pasta and crackers all for free!!!! have to look on the bright side of life!!!!

once you get to know what you can and cant eat it becomes easier and packaging is alot clearer!! i sometimes dream about eating bread but generally i would rather have better health and eat bread!

do you have any pain or anything if you eat gluten???
if you have any questions or just want to general chat drop me a message!!

Look in the super markets, they have gluten free bread in there and also look in the cake/flour section as there are gluten free bread mixes.

its just not the same as a nice tiger loaf!!!! its the one thing they need to work harder at is getting nice bread, as it does all taste a bit like cardboard!!!

Genius bread is really nice and tastes like normal white bread!
