I just did my first early morning blood test before breakfast and it was 10.1. That's a bit alarming!

Hi Edgar.
Good luck with monitor. You will get used to it. You can adjust depth of finger pricker . Near end where lancet pricks your finger there are numbers. Try for the lowest one you can that will give you blood. Think there’s a YouTube video for that.as well. Wash hands in warm warmer and that will help as well. Carol

@Edgar, waking BG can be the hardest one to get down, due to what's known as Dawn Phenomenon. It's when the liver chucks out a load of glucose to get you ready for the day ahead. Not a lot we can do about it, but it will slowly come down.

Yes, but isn't the morning bg also the best rough estimate of how your HbA1c is doing? I have a rare morning bg under 7, but when they were higher so was my other bloods.

I have not noticed that.
I have an app on my phone that gives an estimate of HBA!C and it requires at least 3 readings for a week to give an estimate.

In the Glucose Monitor pack there is a little attachment that looks like it may be something to do with the lancet. Can anyone tell me what it's for please? It's a round short plastic attachment.

Oh, which app, @grovesy ?
My doc (I am a lucky one) not only let's me have an nhs metre & 50 strips a month, (T2, no longer on any meds) but she looks at my online account to review my morning bg's every time I am in to see her no matter if it's for UTI or a broken leg!

I think it’s for using lancet on alternative site. If you look at the leaflet you will see

My pre lunch reading is 6.6, is that ok?

Thanks. I have tried Lidls rolls but find them heavy
I make all my own bread in a breadmaker using wholemeal flour mixed with multi seed bread mix and use candarel imstead of sugar
The LIDL rolls are heavy...try warming them...then split into two...makes them far more palatable...softens the texture perfect for toasting or a sandwich.

That is for use on alternative places to draw blood...your arm...possibly your thigh...sometimes we need/like to give our fingers a rest.

I tend to freeze and then defrost in microwave.Has same effect.

That doesn’t really apply to me Sadhbh. At the moment, my waking bg’s are higher than they have been but can actually be higher than after meals later in the day. Classic dawn phenomenon I suspect.

Whole meal bread is interesting, usually have one slice of Baker Street or Kingsmill with butter and a fried egg at between 15 and 18g of carbohydrate a slice.
This time I got my paws on Hovis Nimble wholemeal at 8.1g of carbohydrate a slice.
But my two hour readings after breakfast for the three days I have been eating it are higher with one slice of Nimble at half the carbohydrate than it was with Baker Street or Kingsmill wholemeal.
Can anyone explain that one?
And there was me hoping I could have two slice instead of one.

This is one of those confusing things with no real solid answers. I would say maybe the nimble is more 'refined' than the Baker Street or Kingsmill & therefore is converting to glucose a bit quicker. I have tried quite a few different breads that are usually OK for other diabetics but they have spiked me, so I stick to trusty old Burgen.
