Just received mine, and on the box there is a mention of Glucose Control Solution with (option) at the end. I can't see this in the pack so do I actually need it? Also, being in my mid 70's, I'm finding it hard to follow all the set up instructions but will persevere. Just a pity there's no one locally who could come and help me!!
 
Hi Edgar, do you mean setting the time and date, or actually using the lancet and meter to do a test? If the latter, there's a useful YouTube video here. The Glucose Control solution is to test that the meter is working correctly, if you ever think you're getting strange results. I've never actually felt the need to use it on my meter, so you probably don't need to worry about that. (NB ignore the strange test result that the demonstrator gets, the figures are in the European/US system that we don't use). If all else fails, bring it, and the instructions, to the Cheltenham meet and we'll try and sort it!
 
All I have done is set the time and date.

After that when you come to test take out the strips, the meter and the lancet "gun".

Take the top off the lancet gun and put one of the blue lancets in the gun having removed the blue disc at the top that covers the tip and pressure home until it clicks, then put the top back on.

Put one strip in the meter, gold end first, that switches it on and you get an image of the test strip, when you get a droplet image hold the lancet against your finger and press the trigger, pick up the meter and scoop up the drop of blood onto the end of the strip, the blood is drawn into the strip, the meter counts down from five to one and gives you your reading.

You will waste a few strips to begin with getting the knack of it but after that it's "simples", honestly.
I couldn't work out how the lancet gun worked so the first couple of times I ended up using the lancet like a pin until I got the hang of it.

Once you've got the basics you can then go advanced and set the alarms and what have you. Good luck

Hi Edgar, I was puzzled at first about the control solution not being enclosed - you have to send off for it separately, as I discovered!

But there should be a test strip in the box, which you can use if you feel something's not right, and it's perfectly adequate.
 
Thanks everyone but I can't even get the setup right. Where it says to set the beep on and off, I don't get that option. Anyway, I've given up for today, will have another go tomorrow and if that's no good, I'll bring it to Cheltenham with me.
 
Hooray! I managed to set it up (not quite precise instructions in the box) and got my first reading. The first strip delivered an E1 warning message to say it was defective, so not a good start. The second one produced a reading of 14.7 about three housr after breakfast.I think that's quite high, I'll test again a couple of hours after lunch. Thanks to all who helped me on this.

Yay, well done! Do run the results past us, yes 14.7 three hours after breakfast is quite high, but it depends what you ate, and what level you started out. At the risk of getting through a lot of strips, it's a good idea to test just before a meal, and then two hours after, when your blood Glucose normally hits its peak, so you can see the difference.
 
Just done a pre lunch test and it was 7.9, but again I had two stripes rejected with the E1 message. I'm supposedly having a healthy luch with sardines, veg and a small amount of pasta (wholemeal) so I'll check again in about twohours and report back. Thank you for all your help.

On the (little :() testing I managed to do, I'm just as likely to peak at 1 hour.
 
The E1 error is usually due to not enough blood on the strip. Also hold the strip upright so it's at a right angle to your finger. The strip will soak the blood up itself. Try not to press hard against the finger.
 
I just did a test two hours after my lunch and it was 13! And it was a healthy lunch!

Pasta makes my readings fly! Even wholemeal. No good.
 
I used mine straight out of the box I was getting some daft results then I cottoned on... Make sure your hands are washed CLEAN before you check. Making cakes or butter icing (self denial exercise) was causing the misread!
 
what about wholemeal bread?
I have no problems with the bread but then again I limit to one/two slices just at breakfast. Foods affect peoples levels differently I was told here and I agree.

If you look at the ingredients list on the packet of a lot of so called wholemeal bread, you find they've got quite a proportion of refined white flour, otherwise they'd be really dense. A lot of people find Burgen soya and linseed bread doesn't cause them problems (or Lidl protein rolls, though there seems to be a supply problem with these at the moment.)
 
Thanks. I have tried Lidls rolls but find them heavy
I make all my own bread in a breadmaker using wholemeal flour mixed with multi seed bread mix and use candarel imstead of sugar
 
Hi Edgar I found I was getting the E1 message when I was a bit too quick putting the blood on the strip. You have to wait till the blood drop symbol shows. Have you tried using spelt flour for your home made bread? It might give better results.
 
That's a good tip about the blood. I'll try the spelt when all mine is used up
