I was prescribed Co-codamol when I broke my wrist many moons ago (pre worrying about being at risk of diabetes). It really helped manage the pain I had but for the first few doses I took the tablets on an empty stomach. They really hurt my stomach with cramps and a feeling like someone was scraping my stomach lining. I made sure after that to take them with food or just after I'd eaten to avoid that.
Co-codamol is a combination of paracetamol and codiene.
I have been prescribed it a few times for pain (e.g. after the operation on my elbow) with no side effects.
They definitely eased my pain.
However, I have never taken many as I am paranoid about any opioid based drugs.
As with all drugs, I recommend reading the patient leaflet in the packet to make sure you are aware what you are taking and any potential side effects.
I was prescribed them after an injury to neck/shoulder junction as the pain kept me awake all night. It took the edge off enough that I could get some sleep. Took fybogel to stop constipation. I also took amitryptilline at the same time as most of the damage was nerve related and it took several months to heal.
I was prescribed them after my Knee surgery but a) they caused constipation, b) made me feel dizzy and light headed, c) felt nauseous. I stopped taking them.
My GP prescribes nefopam for my shoulders but that gave me palpitations, a desperately dry mouth and sleeplessness. So didn't take those either so had the dose of naproxen increased.
It depends a lot on the level of the dose as to how bad the side effects can be. The main side effect for me on high dose codeine was constipation but that was only if I was taking it frequently during the day. If I only took it once a day I was fine. The combination codeine and paracetamol tends to be a lower dose of codeine. Being in pain isn’t good for your body so if you are in pain that you can’t control with just over the counter meds then do consider taking the prescribed ones and see how you go. Things like constipation are temporary and go when you stop taking it.
