Cinnamon

I sprinkled it every day on breakfast through the 1990s. No noticeable effect.
The claims about cinnamon have been around for decades.
When highly refined cinnamon ectract was fed to lab rats it reduced their bgs - humans would need a bucketful a day of the stuff we nornally see to get the same effects.
You have to be wary of food supplements and alternative medicine remedies originating in the Far East, they can lace diabetic "cures" with sulfonylureas
(e.g. gliclazide) so that unwary dmers are taking an unknown dose of a powerful drug but think its the "natural" herb or whatever doing the business.
I read that you only need half a teaspoonful a day. Am prepared to give it a try can't do any harm.

I love the taste of cinnamon, I used to buy cinnamon fruit loafs from Waitrose really tasty. Unfortunately haven't seen any around for a few years.

Cinnamon is also good for your stomach.

I'm guessing using it as an excuse to eat cinnamon danishes probably wont help my diabetes? 😛

I doubt it's beneficial tbh, and as most recipes including cinnamon also contain shedloads of sugar, I'll stick with my diet :D

There seems to be quite a bit of scientific evidence out there about cinnamon.

This article http://www.jabfm.org/cgi/reprint/22/5/507.pdf suggests it can lower HbA1c.

This article http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/26/12/3215.abstract suggests it can lower HbA1c, trigs and cholesterol in T2's.

This article http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14633804 suggests that it can lower BG, trigs and cholesterol.

This article http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17381386?ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_SingleItemSupl.Pubmed_Discovery_RA&linkpos=5&log$=relatedreviews&logdbfrom=pubmed suggests a reduction in BG but they don't encourage its use as an alternative to other therapies, which seems fair enough.

This article http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16634838?ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_SingleItemSupl.Pubmed_Discovery_RA&linkpos=3&log$=relatedarticles&logdbfrom=pubmed suggests a moderate reduction in FBG in patients with poor glycaemic control.

The worst I've found is that it doesn't work at all. I'm inclined to have a go as I can't see it being contra-indicated anywhere.

I have heard that cinnamon can lower blood sugar levels - has anyone tried it?
Hi Sebstar,

There is such a lot of anecdotal evidence about cinnamon's usefulness in being advantageous in area of blood glucose levels that I consider that there is no harm in using it and there could be some advantage.

Apple cider vinegar is something else that falls into the same category - i.e. it is cheap and people claim advantages in using it especially to improve 'on rising' fasting levels. There are some recent threads on the different diabetes forums on this subject.

However, nobody should for one minute consider that either cinnamon - or apple cider vinegar - are some type of panacea for every diabetic's problems because they aren't. I've used cinnamon myself occasionally but never been able to work out any improvement that has come about because of it - I've a more open mind about apple cider vinegar.

In my opinion, diet is without doubt the most powerful way of dealing with high blood glucose levels for non-insulin dependent Type 2s in particular - i.e. cutting back on the starchy carbohydrates - e.g. cereals, bread, potatoes, pasta and rice.

Best wishes - John

Sorry to hear that Katie, hope it comes soon.

I tried one lot of capsules, but found monitoring carbs and insulin doses, and exercise in particular far more effective. I love cinnamon however, and add it to my porridge before cooking, or sprinkle on my shredded wheat, with pumpkin and sunflower seeds (apparently good for lowering cholesterol), some tinned prunes or dried cranberries. I always add it to any apple dish or curry I cook. Special treat is frothy coffee with cinnamon mixed with splendour sprinkled on top!

I want to send another email, but I have no idea what to write this time. "Please talk to me!"?

Is there a telephone number you can call?

Oh dear - what a pain to be let down and have to go the trouble of trying to get the money back. I had the same experience last year - got caught out buying a ticket on behalf of my son for the V festival. got my money back eventually tho'.
