Christmas goodies but not for me

Recently diagnosed type 2 don’t really want to bring diabetes into things with various people I work with and friends.
Being offered lots of carb rich treats such as mince pies chocolates etc and going out for 3 course meal with work which I can't get out of going to have veg soup turkey and vegetables limited potatoes and be too full for dessert
Trying to keep to freshwell most of the time just wondering how others deal with things
 
I try to keep on track carb wise but xmas day i let it slip and give the diabetic fairty some time off As for going out real friends will understand and the rest dont matter. good luck let us know how you get on
 
I take the tops off mince pies - most commercially made ones have an air gap under the lid, so I cut through there and have mince tarts which are usually half the carbs and just as good.
I don't have potatoes, nor Yorkshire pudding, most soups I taste and shudder at, and I ask for cheese rather than a sweet dessert with cucumber celery and/or carrot - offering to slice them myself if they provide a suitable knife. I then amuse myself creating thin slices or slender sticks of the veges whilst most work their way through dessert or sip coffee.

I've learnt to feel no sense of shame or guilt in explaining my dietary requirements: if other people feel awkward about my situation, that's their problem.
 
These days dietary requirements are everywhere and so many people need to be careful what they eat. The list is endless.

I’m normally too full for desert too. In the years I’ve been type one & turning down the sweet stuff. I’ve never been judged. Same with the treats passed round at work. “Thanks for being inclusive. Appreciated.” But I’d have to inject for this. If you know these foods don’t work for you? Just turn it down. There are many with other dietary requirements that also need heeding. There can be a cheeseboard. But even by then, I’m stuffed. “Lovely food. I’m done.” Enjoy your Christmas.
 
Always cheese for me :party:. I'm not bothered about desserts. However, most restaurants serve pathetic slivers of cheese nowadays. I always feel like saying to them: "Don't let it taste of the knife".
I had a cheeseboard option at a Christmas meal I was at recently, which I did option for, unusually in this case. This when it was served was huge. My wife had the accompanying grapes.

Great! I usually eat the grapes or celery (although I'd prefer them to 'hold the fruit' and just give me more cheese) - but I don't eat the biscuits. The family holiday in Switzerland that we went on last summer was a dream for me - although many members of my extended family don't much like cheese 🙄.

If there's a cheeseboard, I just put my head down and snaffle it all up. No-one's ever said to me, "Cliff, I'm judging you" though :party:,

Yup, went to a staff meeting of the carers charity I volunteer for which ended with a Christmas Lunch.

The tables in the meeting room were strewn with sweets, the raffle prizes were mostly chocolate and there were piles of mince pies. I just ignored all the carby sweet stuff and when plied with it, I explained why I was saying no. If anyone was insistent, I simply bored them with a short dissertation on the principles of carb limitation as a means of controlling blood glucose in T2 diabetes. That usually sorts them out.

Main course was served from a buffet so I could ask for what I wanted which helped. Many of us on here would have made a better job of the cooking, especially if we were not trying to serve 150 people at the same time.

For me, the communal Christmas Lunch with all the trimmings is a much overrated experience.

I am taking things onboard and will refuse the carb laden stuff but as others say Christmas appears to be all about stuffing yourself with chocolate and other carb laden foods which last year I would have eaten and enjoyed.
Still looking after health is important and not worth making myself ill to make others happy
 
You may find that after cutting out most of the sweet stuff that all the sweet treats will e anything but as they will taste far too sweet. Like somebody putting sugar in your coffee or tea when you don't take sugar and it will be easy to say no thanks.
With meals then just choose what you prefer and leave the rest.

I prefer the coffee and mini dessert option too, never had a cheeseboard out myself but seen others enjoy them, I do like nice cheese

Same here, things I once would have eaten with great relish I now find unpalatable. One way forward, easier said than done when it comes to dessert type stuff is to swap quantity for quality. Things that you eat with a small spoon and relish each morsel rather than having to bite lumps off a great slab in order to get any flavour. You can only get really good quality in high end restaurants unless you have the time and inclination to make things for yourself. Maybe instead of cakes you go for some really good chocolates, the sort where you eat even a small one in two or three bites just to appreciate the flavours and the skills of the chocolatier.

As much as I like your humour. No. Just no on this “one.” Personal use only. I can’t tell you what a threat like that could implicate. (The needle use without the dose alone is criminal.)

Pathetic slivers of everything served yet prices continue to rise.

We just like traditional pub grub no fancy presented dishes, sadly these places are few & far between now.

My fav thing about christmas day is cheese selection with biscuits on a nigh washed down with few glasses of red, strange that your family don't care much for cheese @CliffH as we're family of cheese lovers, shows how we're all different.
