Not been here in ages. So been dieting since Jan, 12lbs off, HBA1c is now 46% or 6.4 in old money, blood pressure is lower too. However cholesterol is high at 5.8 and gp wants to put me on a statin.
To lose weight i have eaten higher protein and the only naughty stuff i can think off are cheese oatcakes which also have palm fruit oil, 25g of cheddar and sausages. However if i take these out of the diet then what the xxxx do i eat? Dont want to eat pasta/spuds becuase of the bs spike/ or for that matter cereal or more fruit.... or do i just rely on the statin to lower the cholesterol and keep to the diet and lowering of bs?

Hi Lilies, nice to hear from you again 🙂 Well done on all your success, sounds as though you are doing really well!

Has your doctor given you the breakdown of your cholesterol i.e. HDL, LDL and triglycerides? A higher than desirable total cholesterol may not be as bad as it appears if you have a good breakdown. I find that exercise helps tremendously with my cholesterol levels, boosting the 'good' HDL. Also, I believe that carbs are the bigger enemy where triglycerides are concerned.

Level is 5.8 but bad fat worse tan good fat apparently although he didn't give figures.. Hubby who is non diabetic is 5.2 but his good fat is higher. Do GPS try and get all diabetics on statins at a certain level? Or is he paid to put me on a statin- cynical moi?

I've been on a statin since first diagnosed in the early noughties (can't remember when). Apart from some side-effects with the first one, I've had no trouble since. I know there are some strong anti-statin feelings out there, but it might be worth a try. Nowt to lose if you can tolerate them IMO.

For non-diabetics, I think they are happy enough with a level of around 5, but if you have diabetes then they like you to be much lower, at 4 or below ideally. The statins will certainly help and there are different types available if you get side-effects from the more commonly-prescribed ones. You need to avoid them if there is any possibility of you becoming pregnant though, as they can harm the baby.

as they can harm the baby.
WILL harm the baby Northie!

Lilies, Cholesterol is a natural substance that our bodies need to be able to function. It's THE major building block in the body for most of our essential functions. Too little can be as harmful as too much. In recent studies in women a lower chol level has been seen to increase morbidity. It's certainly worth some research on your behalf before accepting statins.

Currently, GPs are awarded points for the percentage of patients achieving 5mmol/L or less.

Need I say any more - it's the earnings that count.
