Hi,

Has the advice on fasting before a cholesterol test changed? it's just that last time I was told that there is now no need to fast, and I got turned away today because I hadn't fasted this morning.

Or does it just vary between areas?

Daniel.

I've just had a fasting test this morning. For HbA1c, cholestorol, etc.

No idea if it's needed or not but I find it easier to do as they ask.🙂

It's been thought for 2 years that it's not necessary to fast, but a lot of places have yet to catch up on the notion:

Mine was fasting too last month. The nurse taking the blood said that the fast didn't include water, but my doc said a sip of water only.

Apparently according to the nurse, the veins may collapse if we become dehydrated.

When I asked I was told nothing but water or tea with nothing in it before a fasting test.

Strangely enough I was going to ask this same question later in the week. Due bloods to be taken and told dsn that I wanted a full cholesterol breakdown, she didn't seem to think this was necessary as my cholesterol's 3.8, just the same I would like to know the individual lipid results together with hba1c.

I find this confusing as the very same nurse who told me NOT to fast for mine told hubby to fast for his. He was allowed water only for 12 hours before the test and it nearly killed him not to be able to drink his usual copious amounts of tea. He had to have an early night to cope. 🙂

He's not diabetic but has recently been diagnosed with high cholesterol after his 'over 50's MOT.'
